Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Health & Safety Associate Director to join our Industrial Hygiene and Built Environment group, within the broader EH&S team. This is a client-facing role focused on managing complex Environmental, Health & Safety related claims and property damage assessments across a range of incident types, including fire and smoke, water ingress and mold, fuel spillages, and asbestos-related contamination. The successful candidate will also be expected to provide high level consultancy work to clients within the broader construction industry.

You will be responsible for delivering high-quality technical assessments and consultancy support, with a strong focus on providing expert Health & Safety advice. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of UK H&S legislation, environmental regulations, and ISO 45001 compliance, along with a good working knowledge of quality management systems such as ISO 9001.

Experience in contractor remediation following loss events - such as asbestos abatement, environmental clean-up, or general recovery and reinstatement after disaster incidents - is highly desirable. A proven track record in consulting and client relationship management is essential for success in this role.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and manage Health & Safety risk and property damage projects from initial assessment through to resolution. This includes providing on-site expert support during client restoration processes to ensure full compliance with statutory H&S regulations.

Deliver expert technical H&S input both remotely and during fieldwork/site visits across a range of scenarios, including:

  • Fire & Smoke Damage: Assess contamination spread, conduct cost vs. damage analysis, ensure regulatory compliance, and advise on H&S requirements during restoration.
  • Water & Mold Damage: Perform indoor environmental quality assessments, evaluate health risks, and develop remediation strategies.
  • Fuel Spillages: Conduct environmental impact assessments, plan mitigation, and oversee remediation efforts.
  • Asbestos & Hazardous Materials: Ensure compliance with the UK Asbestos Regulations 2012, manage abatement strategies, and oversee contractors handling asbestos, lead, mold, and contaminated land.
  • General Property Damage: Provide H&S oversight during restoration following severe weather or other disaster events.
  • Support the UK business in developing and maintaining compliance with ISO 45001, contributing to the continuous improvement of health and safety management systems.
  • Possess or develop knowledge of hazardous waste disposal and the transportation of dangerous goods—experience in these areas is highly desirable.
  • Interpret and evaluate technical reports to assess the adequacy of findings and their implications for liability and cost.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with UK Health & Safety legislation; familiarity with broader EU regulations is a plus.
  • Prepare and deliver clear, concise expert reports, and effectively communicate findings to clients and stakeholders.
  • Support business development through proposal writing, client presentations, and relationship management.
  • Maintain and grow a portfolio of client relationships—a portable book of business is highly desirable.

This role may require significant last-minute travel, depending on client needs. The successful candidate must be flexible, adaptable, and open to learning new skills while applying their subject matter expertise in dynamic environments.

Qualifications

  • A degree in a relevant field such as Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Occupational Hygiene, Environmental Health, Geology, Chemistry, Public Health, or Civil Engineering with environmental modules.
  • Ideally, 15+ years of experience in Health & Safety consultancy, with a strong technical background in fire, water, mold, asbestos, and contamination-related claims.
  • In-depth knowledge of the UK Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and associated regulations.
  • Proven ability to manage complex projects and deliver high-quality outcomes under tight deadlines; project management qualifications are a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience in client-facing roles.
  • Demonstrated success in business development, including proposal writing and client retention.
  • Relevant professional qualifications (e.g. NEBOSH, IOSH, BOHS, IEMA, CIWEM, or similar) are preferred.
  • Chartered status or working towards chartership, with the ability to achieve it in a short timeframe through documented experience.
  • Experience working with insurers, loss adjusters, or legal teams on H&S matters.
  • A strong professional network within the H&S, environmental consulting, or insurance sectors.
