AECOM is currently seeking an Associate Director (Fire Engineer) to be based in our Manchester office. This is a consultancy-based position requiring demonstrable experience across various sectors and technical fire engineering applications within a client-focused environment.

You will be responsible for overseeing and developing a team of fire engineers within the Manchester office. Performance at this level requires developmental experience in a professional setting.

This position is well suited for an established consultant looking to advance or someone eager to work in a multi-disciplinary design consultancy with a reputable fire safety team.

What you’ll do!

People

  • Lead and manage workload, project delivery, and team performance.
  • Oversee project delivery within the Middle East region, ensuring compliance with regulations and client expectations.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and leadership to ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and to high standards.
  • Lead Performance & Review processes, setting SMART goals for team members.
  • Conduct staff appraisals and support professional development plans.
  • Assist in training and mentoring staff for technical growth and Chartership support.

Projects

  • Estimate budgets and schedules for fire engineering on large, complex projects.
  • Lead project delivery on medium to large projects nationally and internationally.
  • Become and lead as AEOCM Approved Lead Verifier and Project Manager, acting as project approver.
  • Manage client relationships and contribute to business development.
  • Ensure quality work delivery within agreed timelines and budgets.

Business

  • Implement all AECOM Health & Safety policies.
  • Maintain strong client relationships.
  • Promote AECOM’s Fire Engineering services and attract new business.
  • Support team KPIs and develop recruitment and marketing strategies.
  • Contribute to the Fire Team Business Plan and its implementation.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Experience working on Middle East projects.
  • Extensive experience in a large, multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Knowledge of Middle Eastern standards (NFPA, IBC, IFC, UAE Fire Code, Saudi Building Code, Qatar Civil Defence Guidelines).
  • Proficiency with fire engineering tools like FDS, SFS, evacuation modelling.
  • Membership in relevant professional institutions (e.g., MI Fire) and certifications (NFPA CFPE).

Preferred:

  • UK or other nationalities considered.
  • Security clearance.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) with the Institute of Fire Engineering.
  • Advanced knowledge of fire engineering tools and standards (FDS, evacuation modelling, structural fire safety).
  • MSc or PhD in fire-related disciplines.
  • International standards experience (IBC, SFPE, NFPA).
