Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil Engineering and experience managing development projects.
  • Chartered or Incorporated status is desirable.
  • Broad project experience across civil disciplines including drainage, utilities and highways.
  • Proven track record in project management and financial control.
  • Commercial and strategic capability with ability to win new business.
  • Strong leadership, mentoring and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to present, facilitate workshops and lead training sessions.
  • Effective communication across the business and with external partners.

Job description

Role Overview

As an Associate based out of our Newcastle office, you will provide technical leadership to our design teams and use your knowledge and skills to deliver high‑quality outcomes on time and within budget. You will lead design teams, mentor junior members, and support program leadership across the Region.

Responsibilities
  • Technical leadership of civil engineering design projects in the UK and overseas.
  • Act as Project Director or Project Manager on a wide range of projects, reviewing and optimising solutions and coordinating multidisciplinary inputs.
  • Manage resources at the project level and oversee the local team.
  • Agree fees and manage the commercial position of projects.
  • Lead a culture of technical review and challenge.
  • Develop client relationships and help them achieve sustainable, future‑proof developments.
  • Lead and contribute to tenders and bids.
  • Supervise and mentor junior team members.
  • Support our lead for the Region and local Office Place Lead, alongside the wider Development team and WSP business development leaders.
  • Work collaboratively with the Development team and other WSP colleagues to achieve our objectives.

Qualifications
  • BEng / BSc (Hon) in Civil Engineering or a related qualification, with experience in managing development projects.
  • Chartered/Incorporated professional qualification from a relevant body (desirable).
  • A broad range of project experience across civil engineering disciplines and multi‑disciplinary projects, including drainage, utilities and highway engineering.
  • Proven track record in project management and financial control.
  • Commercial and strategic capability, with a demonstrated record of identifying and delivering new business opportunities.
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership and management skills capable of communicating effectively across the business.
  • Expert stakeholder management and relationship building abilities.
  • Ability to improve, motivate and encourage others, lead and implement change programmes, inspiring colleagues and fostering an innovative, supportive culture.
  • Passion for mentoring and developing talent.
  • Active champion of sharing knowledge, ideas and intelligence.
  • Presentation skills; able to lead and facilitate workshops, training sessions and one‑to‑one learning.
  • Influential and persuasive internally and externally, encouraging open dialogue and feedback.
