Job summary

WSP in Edinburgh seeks a Senior Engineer to support our regional Development Team, focusing on civil infrastructure for development projects. You will contribute to design, reporting and masterplanning for planning applications while collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams.

You will engage with clients and authorities, delivering designs that meet budgets, programmes and technical standards, under senior supervision.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of highway/roads design, drainage strategy and flood risk assessment.
  • Experience with utility design and planning in UK development projects.
  • Understanding of design codes and planning approvals processes.
  • Ability to produce infrastructure masterplans, site appraisals, technical reports and construction drawings.
  • Aware of climate change and sustainability considerations in design.

Responsibilities

  • Support development team in Edinburgh on civil infrastructure projects.
  • Produce designs, drawings and technical reports for masterplanning and planning applications.
  • Engage with clients, co-professionals and authorities to secure approvals.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary design teams and ensure delivery to budget and schedule.
  • Mentor junior staff and provide guidance on design standards.

A little more about your role…

You will be an enthusiastic Senior Engineer involved in supporting our regional Development Team in Edinburgh, focusing on civil engineering for development infrastructure.

You will work within a team supporting the production of designs and drawings for construction projects and technical reports for masterplanning in support of planning applications. You can expect to be active on several projects and client accounts at any given time. You will report to a senior member of the Development Team. You can expect your role to involve:

  • Providing day to day support in the delivery of concept studies / strategies with hands on design, leading to planning applications, technical approval submissions and construction drawing issue.
  • Contributing to all types of Development projects across all sectors and clients.
  • Being active on several varied multi-disciplinary project/client accounts at any given time.
  • You will be supported by a team of experienced and developing technical staff of various grades, to whom you will be expected to provide guidance and support as appropriate.
  • Involvement in high profile client engagement, stakeholder management, design team liaison (both internal and with other external multidisciplinary professionals) and project management
  • Being responsible, or actively engaged depending on experience, for ensuring your projects are delivered to budget, programme, technical standards and legal requirements.
What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…
  • Knowledge of, and experience in highway/roads design, drainage strategy and design, flood risk assessment and management, utility design and planning as well as a working knowledge of the Development Industry in the UK.
  • An appreciation of hydraulics, hydrology, geotechnics and building structures is desirable as well as an understanding of construction design stages and procedures
  • The ability to produce infrastructure masterplans, site appraisals, technical reports, design calculations and construction drawings
  • Knowledge of the relevant design codes such as, Water UK Sewerage Sector Guidance, Design Manual for Roads & Bridges, Designing Streets, Local Authority Design Guidance and are well versed in the preparation of drawings for contract documentation and technical approvals
  • Aware of current and emerging technical and planning guidance on climate change and sustainability
  • The ability to use or direct and check the use of relevant software including InfoDrainage, Civils 3D and/or PDS
  • Experience of liaison with clients, co-professionals and design teams, and competence in liaising with highway, water, statutory and local authorities to negotiate the necessary outline and detailed technical approvals and statutory agreements typically relating to development projects
  • Knowledge of the relevant legal processes, planning, design, design software, technical consents process, adoption and contract procedures for the provision of sewers, SuDS, highways and utilities to new developments and regeneration projects and how if, applied effectively, these skills combine to add value to a client’s development proposal
  • A robust knowledge of the financial and contractual aspects of planning, bidding, and delivering both large and small projects
