Job description

Ayesa Engineering is a global consultancy with more than 3,200 employees. Its UK & Ireland business combines the strength and resources of an international organisation with the agility and autonomy typically associated with an SME.

Operating in 16 countries across 40 disciplines, Ayesa Engineering generates annual revenues of approximately €312 million and has established a strong international reputation across a broad range of engineering sectors. Its expertise spans water and flood infrastructure, transportation, marine and coastal engineering, geoscience, environmental services, energy, and building structures.

The UK & Ireland teams deliver technically complex and varied projects that enable professionals to develop broad expertise rather than being confined to highly specialised roles. This provides the opportunity to make a meaningful local impact while benefiting from the stability, technical knowledge, and career development opportunities of a well‑established global consultancy.

Position

At Ayesa, we are committed to delivering innovative, sustainable and technically excellent engineering solutions that shape the future of infrastructure.

As we continue to expand our rail engineering capabilities across the UK, we are seeking an experienced Associate Rail / Civil Engineer to play a key role in leading the design and delivery of complex rail infrastructure projects.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer to take on a senior technical and project leadership position, working on major UK rail programmes while contributing to the continued growth of our rail engineering business.

What you will be doing:
Technical Leadership & Design
  • Lead and oversee the design and delivery of multidisciplinary rail and civil engineering projects, ensuring technical quality, compliance and successful project outcomes.
  • Provide technical expertise across rail infrastructure, including track‑related civil works, earthworks, drainage, foundations, retaining structures and associated infrastructure.
  • Act as Technical Lead or Contractor's Responsible Engineer (CRE), where appropriately qualified and appointed.
  • Review and approve engineering designs, technical specifications, calculations and design documentation within delegated authority.
  • Ensure compliance with Network Rail standards, relevant Eurocodes, British Standards and project‑specific requirements.
  • Coordinate with track, structural, geotechnical, signalling, electrification and other engineering disciplines.
Project Delivery & Commercial Management
  • Lead engineering teams through feasibility, concept, detailed design and construction support stages.
  • Manage project deliverables, budgets, resources and programmes to ensure successful delivery.
  • Identify and manage technical risks, design changes and commercial opportunities.
  • Support the preparation of tenders, technical proposals, fee estimates and resource plans.
  • Work closely with project managers to monitor financial performance, project profitability and client requirements
Client & Stakeholder Management
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, including Network Rail, rail operators, contractors and infrastructure delivery partners.
  • Represent Ayesa at technical reviews, design meetings and client discussions.
  • Provide technical advice and develop practical engineering solutions to complex infrastructure challenges.
  • Support business development activities, identifying opportunities to strengthen existing relationships and secure new projects.
  • Lead, mentor and support engineers and technicians across the rail and civil engineering teams.
  • Provide technical guidance, design assurance and quality reviews.
  • Support team development, resource planning and knowledge sharing.
  • Promote a collaborative approach across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Requirements
  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Railway Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum 10 years' relevant experience within rail infrastructure or civil engineering, ideally gained within an engineering consultancy or multidisciplinary design environment.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with the ICE or another relevant professional institution, or equivalent demonstrable professional expertise.
  • Strong technical knowledge of rail‑associated civil engineering infrastructure, design standards and delivery processes.
  • Proven experience leading engineering design teams and delivering complex infrastructure projects.
  • Experience working on UK rail projects, ideally including Network Rail infrastructure.
  • Strong understanding of engineering design assurance, technical governance and safety requirements.
  • Demonstrable commercial awareness, including project budgets, resource planning, fee management and programme delivery.
  • Excellent client relationship management, communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and manage competing project priorities.
