Job summary

We currently have a vacancy for one Band 6 Assistant Ward Manager to join us on Cedars Ward, an Older Adults team in Oldham. Cedars ward specialises in caring for men over 65 with a diagnosis of dementia or other organic illness which requires a period of hospital admission.

Main duties of the job

Role Summary:

The successful candidate will be able to work effectively as an Assistant Ward Manager, have excellent communication skills, welcome a challenge, and have a genuine desire to improve the care provided to older adults.

They will be expected to work across a 24-hour cycle, providing role modeling, support, and leadership on both day and night shifts.

Job responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess needs, plan, implement, and evaluate care programs for ward patients.
  • Supervise junior staff to ensure high standards of nursing care, in line with Trust policies, the Mental Health Act, and legal requirements.
  • Deputize for the Ward Manager when absent.
  • Provide supervision and IPDR to junior staff.
Person Specification

Education / Qualifications (Essential):

  • First level registration (RMN)
  • Diploma or equivalent post-registration qualification
  • Evidence of CPD
  • IT literacy
  • Training in violence and aggression management

Experience (Essential):

  • Experience at Band 5 with clinical management skills
  • Experience in older adult mental health settings

Knowledge (Essential):

  • Understanding of mental illness and treatments for organic mental health needs
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act and CPA
  • Understanding of confidentiality and data protection

Skills and Abilities (Essential):

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, especially with sensitive information
  • Ability to complete documentation accurately
  • Positive attitude and good social skills with team members, service users, carers, and visitors
