It is a career-graded post with progression from Assistant Technician to Senior Engineer depending on qualifications and experience.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Highway Design Team. The team is responsible for developing and delivering highway improvement projects across the Borough of Darlington, supporting the Council's commitment to providing a safe, efficient and accessible transport network.

Successful applicants will be involved in the design and delivery of a diverse range of highway schemes, including accessibility improvements, traffic management and road safety measures, bus priority initiatives, major network enhancements, and the development of walking and cycling infrastructure. This role offers the opportunity to work on projects that directly benefit local communities, improve connectivity and help shape the future of transport throughout the borough.

This is a career-graded post, providing opportunities for individuals at different stages of their professional development. Applicants may join as an Assistant Technician (Band 1) with no previous experience, developing their skills and knowledge while studying at college on a day-release basis, or as a Technician (Band 5), Senior Technician (Band 8) or Assistant Engineer (Band 9), depending on your qualifications and work history.

The successful candidate will be IT literate, with the ability to use Microsoft Office applications including Word and Excel. You will possess good communication and problem-solving skills, demonstrate accuracy and attention to detail in your work, and be capable of organising and prioritising your workload effectively.

Working from home arrangements are available where appropriate, although all staff must be able to work from Darlington’s Allington Way Depot as required.
