Job summary

The Assistant Service Manager sits in the Medical Rota Team at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, supporting a seven‑day rota across Emergency Department, Acute Medicine and Medicine on call.

You will line manage the Rota Team, deputise for the Service Manager, monitor staffing levels and rota deadlines, liaise with clinical colleagues, and help deliver cost improvements and budget awareness within NHS governance frameworks.

Qualifications

• Demonstrable NHS management experience, including staff management, budgetary responsibility and performance targets.
• Experience of rota management for medical staff or similar.

Responsibilities

• Create and distribute rotas with Rota Co-ordinators to set deadlines.
• Manage day-to-day running of medical staffing rotas for Emergency Department, Acute Medicine and Medicine on call.
• Line manage the Rota Team and ensure key performance targets are met.
• Deputise for the Service Manager and attend regular update meetings with clinical colleagues.
• Monitor weekly rota cover and plan ahead to meet core staffing requirements.
• Deputise for the Service Manager to ensure safe staffing levels on ward areas.
• Act as the point of contact for escalations and help solve problems.
• Liaise with stakeholders and attend regular planning meetings.
• Work with the Service Manager to monitor expenditure and cost improvements, reducing medical locum spend and suggesting cost-effective staffing solutions.
