Job summary

Breedon Group plc is seeking an Assistant Quarry Manager for Gilfach Quarry in Neath Port Talbot. Reporting to the Quarry Manager, you will support day-to-day operations, supervise teams and contractors, and help ensure safety, quality, and efficiency across blasting, crushing, screening, and stockpiling activities.

You will be responsible for maintaining records, assisting with budgets, and contributing to long-term quarry development and rehabilitation.

Qualifications

• NVQ Level 4/5 in Health, Safety & Environmental Management.
• Degree or diploma in Quarry Management, Mining Engineering, Geology, or a related field.
• Valid UK driving license.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the planning and scheduling of production, including blasting, crushing, screening, and stockpiling to high standards.
• Help oversee quarry operations to meet production targets safely, efficiently, and within budget.
• Participate in quality control procedures to ensure materials meet required standards.
• Monitor and maintain equipment and machinery through preventative maintenance schedules.
• Keep accurate records of materials produced, stock levels, maintenance, and safety incidents.
• Help manage budgets, control costs, and assist with ordering and inventory of consumables and parts.
• Provide input for long-term planning, including quarry development and rehabilitation.
• Supervise and coordinate quarry colleagues and contractors, including assigning duties and monitoring performance.

Position Overview: We are seeking a motivated and safety-conscious Assistant Quarry Manager to support the efficient and safe day-to-day operations of our Gilfach quarry. Reporting to the Quarry Manager, you will help oversee production activities, ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations, support the management of colleagues and contractors, and contribute to continuous improvement in operational efficiency and product quality. You will be the “Responsible Person” on site in the absence of the Quarry Manager.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist in the planning and scheduling of production, including blasting crushing, screening and stockpiling to ensure it is carried out to the highest standard
• Assist the Quarry Manager in overseeing quarry operations to ensure production targets are met safely, efficiently, and within budget
• Participate in quality control procedures to ensure materials meet required standards and specifications
• Monitor and maintain equipment and machinery through preventative maintenance schedules to reduce downtime and improve productivity
• Keep accurate records of materials produced, stock levels, maintenance, and safety incidents
• Help manage budgets, control costs, and assist with ordering and inventory of consumables and spare parts
• Provide input for long-term planning, including quarry development and rehabilitation
• Supervise and coordinate quarry colleagues and contractors, including assigning duties, monitoring performance, and promoting teamwork
• Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations
• Support the implementation of safety programs and conduct regular inspections and risk assessments, reporting defects
• Deputise for the Quarry Manager when required

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

Essential

• NVQ Level 4/5 in Health, Safety & Environmental Management
• Degree or diploma in Quarry Management, Mining Engineering, Geology, or a related field
• Strong understanding of quarrying processes and plant operations
• Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations and best practices
• Strong leadership and people management skills
• Competence in using quarry management systems and Microsoft Office Suite
• Excellent problem-solving and decision-making ability
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills
• Strong organisational and time-management abilities
• High attention to detail
• Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing priorities
• Valid UK driver's license
