Job summary

Breedon Group plc seeks an Assistant Quarry Manager to support Potton and Willington quarries. You will report to the Quarry Manager, oversee production activities, ensure safety and regulatory compliance, and help manage teams and contractors across two Bedfordshire sites.

You will contribute to continuous improvement in efficiency and product quality while acting as the Responsible Person on site in the Quarry Manager's absence. NVQ 4/5 in HSEQ and a relevant degree are required.

Qualifications

• NVQ Level 4/5 in Health, Safety & Environmental Management is required.
• Degree or diploma in Quarry Management, Mining Engineering, Geology, or a related field is preferred.
• Valid UK driving licence is required.

Responsibilities

• Assist in planning and scheduling production, including screening and stockpiling to high standards.
• Assist Quarry Manager to meet production targets safely and within budget.
• Participate in quality control to ensure materials meet standards.
• Monitor and maintain equipment with preventative maintenance schedules.
• Keep records of materials produced, stock, maintenance, and safety incidents.
• Help manage budgets, control costs, and assist with purchasing and inventory.
• Support long-term planning, including quarry development and rehabilitation.
• Supervise quarry colleagues and contractors, assign duties, monitor performance.
• Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
• Assist in safety programmes and conduct risk assessments on site.
• Deputise for the Quarry Manager when required.

Job description

We are seeking a motivated and safety-conscious Assistant Quarry Manager to support the efficient and safe day-to-day operations of our Potton and Willington quarry. Reporting to the Quarry Manager, you will help oversee production activities, ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations, support the management of colleagues and contractors, and contribute to continuous improvement in operational efficiency and product quality. You will be the "Responsible Person" on site in the absence of the Quarry Manager. This role is based on 48 hours a week plus overtime covering two Bedfordshire sites within 20 minutes of each other.,

• Assist in the planning and scheduling of production, including screening and stockpiling to ensure it is carried out to the highest standard
• Assist the Quarry Manager in overseeing quarry operations to ensure production targets are met safely, efficiently, and within budget
• Participate in quality control procedures to ensure materials meet required standards and specifications
• Monitor and maintain equipment and machinery through preventative maintenance schedules to reduce downtime and improve productivity
• Keep accurate records of materials produced, stock levels, maintenance, and safety incidents
• Help manage budgets, control costs, and assist with ordering and inventory of consumables and spare parts
• Provide input for long-term planning, including quarry development and rehabilitation
• Supervise and coordinate quarry colleagues and contractors, including assigning duties, monitoring performance, and promoting teamwork
• Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations
• Support the implementation of safety programs and conduct regular inspections and risk assessments, reporting defects
• Deputise for the Quarry Manager when required
  NVQ Level 4/5 in Health, Safety & Environmental Management
• Degree or diploma in Quarry Management, Mining Engineering, Geology, or a related field
• Strong understanding of quarrying processes and plant operations
• Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations and best practices
• Strong leadership and people management skills
• Competence in using quarry management systems and Microsoft Office Suite
• Excellent problem-solving and decision‑making ability
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills
• Strong organisational and time‑management abilities
