Job summary

Associated British Ports (ABP) seeks an Assistant Project Manager to support the Humber programme pipeline, including RoRo port expansion and a major green energy scheme. The role spans concept to delivery across multiple projects, working with regional operations, engineering, commercial and property teams.

You will help ensure safe, efficient delivery, with strong governance and value for money, while engaging stakeholders and adhering to environmental regulation across the UK.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years’ experience supporting capital infrastructure projects.
• Degree (or equivalent) in Project Management, Engineering or a related discipline.
• Working towards (or membership of) APM, ICE or similar body.
• Familiarity with nationally significant infrastructure projects, consenting processes or environmental regulation across the UK.

• Maintain project documentation, schedules and reporting to ensure delivery against time, cost and quality objectives.
• Assist with development of business cases and project options to secure value for money.
• Manage scope, risk, change and governance through the project lifecycle.
• Support stakeholder and community engagement including planning and consenting processes.
• Coordinate procurement and contract administration, ensuring best value and reduced risk.
• Encourage knowledge sharing and continuous improvement within Major Projects.

We have a vacancy within the Major Projects group for an Assistant Project Manager to support development and delivery of key port infrastructure that will support further support our twin missions of Keeping Britain Trading and Enabling the Energy Transition.

The purpose of this role is to ensure optimal delivery of the business case through strong cross-functional project management, with the returns of the project optimised throughout its lifecycle. This position offers a long‑term career path for project professionals that enjoy the challenge of varying project and geographical environments.

Our projects are delivered within our regional context, and this role will deliver in strong collaboration with regional functions. This is critical to ensure we adapt to the local conditions and leverage the resources and expertise already established.

To help deliver this transformation, we are expanding our Major Projects team and have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Project Manager to support the Humber programme pipeline which includes a major RoRo port expansion currently underway, a large green energy scheme consented and a diverse pipeline of early‑stage projects progressing across the region. This role will not be focused on a single initiative — instead, you’ll gain exposure across multiple projects at different project lifecycle stages from concept through to delivery.

As an Assistant Project Manager, you’ll play a key role in turning high‑value opportunities into real‑world delivery. Working within cross‑functional project teams and alongside regional operations, engineering, commercial and property colleagues, you’ll help ensure our major projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards.

What You’ll Be Doing

Supporting the delivery of major capital projects by:

• Maintaining project documentation, schedules and reporting to ensure delivery against time, cost and quality objectives.
• Assisting with the development of business cases and project options to secure strong value for money.
• Managing scope, risk, change and governance throughout the project lifecycle.
• Supporting stakeholder and community engagement activities, including planning and consenting processes.
• Coordinating procurement and contract administration, ensuring best value and reduced risk to ABP.
• Encouraging knowledge sharing and continuous improvement across the Major Projects team.
• Promoting a strong culture of health, safety and wellbeing in all activities.

Skills and Experiences

• Minimum 3 years’ experience supporting capital infrastructure projects.
• Strong organisational, communication and reporting skills.
• Experience collaborating across multidisciplinary teams.
• Flexibility to work across the UK, with regular travel to ABP ports and partner locations (all travel covered in line with policy).
• Experience in transport, maritime, rail, logistics or port environments.
• Positive, high‑energy attitude with a proactive and self‑motivated approach.
• Flexibility to travel within the Humber region and beyond.

Ideal
