Job description

About us

We are a specialist provider of support services to distribution network operators, developers and industrial energy users making the transition to net zero by electrifying heat, transport and industry.

Job Description

UK Networks Services (UKNS) is an engineering company at the forefront of the UK’s transition to a smarter, more flexible electricity system. Our work spans two core areas:

  • Technical grid consulting – advising on complex grid connections, regulatory strategy, and power system planning for some of the UK’s most significant infrastructure projects.
  • Smart grid control systems – designing and deploying advanced automation, monitoring, and control solutions that enable customers to connect, manage and optimise energy assets across large, distributed networks.

The Assistant Project Engineer role will work across both areas of the business, supporting the successful integration and deployment of our systems in line with client requirements, company policies and relevant industry standards.

The ideal candidate for this role will be someone who has gained hands‑on experience in the industry as an industrial electrician, cable jointer, fitter or similar technical role. It would also be suitable for candidates who have developed technical knowledge as an engineering assistant, trainee engineer or project support engineer and are looking to progress into a project engineering role.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Supporting the delivery of engineering projects from concept, design and procurement through to installation, commissioning, energisation and final handover.
  • Assisting with the coordinating project activities to ensure works are delivered safely, efficiently and in accordance with client requirements, project specifications, industry standards and company procedures.
  • Supporting commissioning activities, including testing, energisation, client demonstrations, DNO witness testing and compliance with relevant engineering standards and recommendations.
  • Working with project engineers, subcontractors, suppliers, clients, ICPs, DNOs, CPOs and equipment manufacturers to support successful project delivery.
  • Assisting with the preparation, review and adherence to job‑specific RAMS, CDM requirements and company policies and procedures.
  • Supporting the production and review of technical specifications, drawings, commissioning documentation, project reports, handover packs and other engineering documentation.
  • Support the preparation of technical proposals, tender submissions and supporting documentation to assist with new business opportunities.
  • Assisting with the research, development and deployment of innovative Smart Technology solutions, including systems for energy monitoring, load control, generation control and grid connection compliance.
  • Reviewing project information, identifying technical queries, supporting risk identification and escalating issues where required.
  • Maintaining accurate project records, action trackers, site notes and documentation to support good governance and company certification.
  • Building effective working relationships with colleagues, clients, contractors, suppliers and other project stakeholders.
  • Supporting the delivery of projects to a high standard of workmanship, technical compliance and customer satisfaction.
RequirementsEssential Qualifications & Certifications

  • Willingness to learn, ask questions and develop technical knowledge through on-the-job experience and training.
  • Self‑motivated, proactive and able to manage tasks with guidance from project engineers and senior colleagues.
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to engage professionally with colleagues, clients, contractors and suppliers.
  • Good organisational skills, attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records and project documentation.
