JGA Recruitment Group Ltd in Harrow, London is seeking an experienced Assistant Payroll Manager to join an established accountancy practice. This senior, hands-on role will be the number two to the Payroll Manager and will involve managing a portfolio of around 500 client payrolls, primarily small businesses with 1-50 employees, in a busy bureau environment.

The role is permanent, full-time with a hybrid working pattern: three days in the office and two days at home.

Qualifications

  • Strong bureau/accountancy practice experience in UK payroll.
  • Extensive end-to-end UK payroll processing experience.
  • Ability to independently manage a large client payroll portfolio.
  • Solid knowledge of UK payroll legislation, pensions and statutory payments.
  • Experience reviewing or checking other payroll professionals' work.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a large portfolio of weekly, monthly and annual client payrolls.
  • Process starters, leavers, SSP, SMP, SPP and other adjustments.
  • Manage pensions and auto-enrolment requirements.
  • Independently manage client payrolls from onboarding through delivery.
  • Review and sign off payroll work by team members.
  • Liaise with clients, HMRC, pension providers and statutory bodies.
  • Ensure payrolls meet deadlines, SLAs and compliance requirements.
  • Work with an offshore payroll team to support portfolio delivery.
  • Maintain strong technical knowledge of UK payroll legislation.

Salary: Up to £45,000 + discretionary bonus

Location: Harrow, London

Hybrid: 3 days office / 2 days home

Contract: Permanent, Full-Time

The Role

An opportunity for an experienced bureau payroll professional to join an established accountancy practice as the number two to the Payroll Manager.

This is a senior, hands-on processing role with responsibility for a portfolio of approximately 500 client payrolls, predominantly smaller businesses with 1-50 employees.

Key Responsibilities
  • * Manage a large portfolio of weekly, monthly and annual client payrolls.
  • * Process starters, leavers, SSP, SMP, SPP and other payroll adjustments.
  • * Manage pensions and auto-enrolment requirements.
  • * Independently manage client payrolls from onboarding through to ongoing delivery.
  • * Review and sign off payroll work completed by other team members where required.
  • * Liaise directly with clients, HMRC, pension providers and other statutory bodies.
  • * Ensure payrolls meet agreed deadlines, SLAs and compliance requirements.
  • * Work closely with an offshore payroll team to support wider portfolio delivery.
  • * Maintain strong technical knowledge of UK payroll legislation.
Ideal Candidate

    • * Able to independently manage a large portfolio of client payrolls.
    • * Strong technical knowledge of UK payroll legislation, pensions and statutory payments.
    • * Experience reviewing or checking other payroll professionals' work.
    • * Previous team management experience is not essential.
    • * BrightPay, Xero and/or Sage experience would be advantageous.
    • * Suitable for an experienced Senior Payroll Specialist, Payroll Supervisor or Payroll Team Leader looking for their next step.
