Job description
The team

KPMG's Major Projects Advisory (MPA) team works with industry-leading organisations, helping to solve some of the biggest challenges in infrastructure. As a market leader, we serve an impressive client base across the commercial and public sectors, delivering lasting results on projects and programmes which are household names.

We focus on providing clarity to Boards, Executives, and SROs at major public and private sector organisations, on project and programme delivery. We work on some of the UK's most strategically important programmes across sectors including transport, natural resources, energy, power and utilities, corporates, oil & gas, defence, health, housing, and education.

Our team comprises specialists with deep construction industry experience, from working for project owners, contractors, engineering consultants, and others in the UK and overseas.

On the back of continuing growth, we're investing in our team to enhance our capabilities. This means you'll join one of the fastest-growing areas of the firm at a significant time.

The role

This position is for an innovative professional at Assistant Manager level, who can collaborate with our team to apply their experience in planning, scheduling, and project controls in construction to solve complex problems. We value diversity and tailor our team to meet client needs. We select our people carefully because they are our most important asset, and people choose us because of our commitment to that principle.

Assistant Managers in our team are client-facing and play a key role in delivery. This role requires prior experience, ideally from infrastructure projects and programmes, but we will consider candidates from other relevant fields.

As part of a consulting team, you'll apply your expertise daily, creating tailored solutions for clients and managing relationships.

The UK MPA team is based in London, Birmingham, and Manchester. The role will be based in one of these locations and will involve travel throughout the UK and occasionally overseas.

The team member

We seek candidates with some post-qualification experience in planning, scheduling, and project controls within major projects and programmes, from contracting, consulting, or government roles.

Your track record should demonstrate:
  • A solid understanding of planning, including schedule development, updates, monitoring, reporting, risk management, change control, and process improvements.
  • Experience in major infrastructure projects, ideally in transport, defence, power, utilities, or nuclear sectors.
  • Skills in investigating schedule and cost performance, analyzing variances, and proposing mitigation strategies.
  • Development of tools and reports supporting project controls.
  • Risk identification and analysis.
  • Performance monitoring and assurance for projects and programmes.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain excellent relationships and network across the firm.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills.
  • A desire to learn and develop new skills in planning and project controls.
  • Proficiency in Excel, MS Project, and Oracle P6.

Additional helpful experience includes:

  • Public sector experience.
  • Delay and scenario analysis.
  • Dispute advisory or expert witness experience.
  • Supporting advisory services like organisational design and governance.
  • Performance and efficiency improvements.
  • Enhancing project and programme controls.
  • Reviews of troubled projects or programmes.
  • Relevant professional certifications such as APM PMQ/PPQ, MoP, MSP, or PRINCE2.
Daily responsibilities include:
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary consulting teams.
  • Managing client-facing work, designing processes and tools with a focus on end-user needs, and producing high-quality outputs.
  • Advising clients on planning strategies and scenario impacts.
  • Staying updated on technical developments, contributing to thought leadership, and developing KPMG’s technical position.
  • Understanding and leveraging other KPMG services to create integrated solutions.
  • Coaching and mentoring colleagues.
  • Living our values and serving as a role model.
