Job summary

ABB is seeking an Assistant HSE Manager at its Stonehouse site to support the delivery of the HSE strategy and drive improvements across health, safety and environment. You will work closely with the HSE Manager to shape a positive safety culture and ensure compliance with local legislation and ABB standards.

You will guide line managers, oversee risk assessments and incident reporting, and promote learning across the business.

Qualifications

• NEBOSH qualification is essential.
• Proven experience in Health, Safety and Environmental role within a manufacturing environment.
• Strong understanding of HSE legislation, compliance requirements, and risk management.
• Experience managing, conducting, and controlling HSE audits.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Experience coaching leaders and managers on HSE matters; drive continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

• Support the HSE Manager in delivering the site HSE strategy in line with ABB Way.
• Assist line managers and supervisors in understanding HSE responsibilities and legal obligations.
• Ensure HSE capabilities are maintained and aligned with standards and best practices.
• Support provision and use of HSE-related equipment, tools, and resources.
• Oversee HSE risk assessments and implement preventive and corrective actions.
• Ensure HSE incidents, near misses, and observations are reported with actions followed through.
• Drive positive behavioural change via ABB group-wide and site programmes.
• Promote and embed a strong HSE culture across the organisation.
• Lead and support HSE-related learning and development activities.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to strengthen HSE performance and share best practice.

This position reports to:

HSE Manager

As Assistant HSE Manager, you'll play a key role in shaping and strengthening ABB's health, safety, and environmental culture across the Stonehouse site. Working closely with the HSE Manager, you'll support the delivery of the site HSE strategy, drive continuous improvement initiatives, and provide expert guidance to leaders and employees across the business. This role has been identified as part of our succession planning strategy, offering a unique opportunity to work alongside the current HSE Manager ahead of their planned retirement in approximately two years' time. With mentoring, support, and exposure to all aspects of site HSE leadership, this position is ideally suited to an experienced HSE professional looking to take the next step in their career and prepare for future leadership responsibilities.

Your Role And Responsibilities

In this role, you'll help drive ABB's commitment to health, safety, and environmental excellence by supporting continuous improvement and fostering a positive safety culture across the site.

• Support the HSE Manager in delivering the site HSE strategy in line with the ABB Way.
• Assist line managers and supervisors in understanding their HSE responsibilities, legal obligations, and requirements for effective role fulfilment in accordance with local legislation and ABB standards.
• Ensure HSE capabilities are maintained and aligned with company standards, processes, guidelines, and best practices.
• Support the provision and effective use of HSE-related equipment, tools, and resources across the site.
• Oversee HSE risk assessments conducted by line management and ensure appropriate preventive and corrective measures are implemented.
• Ensure HSE incidents, near misses, and observations are reported to management and relevant stakeholders, with appropriate actions followed through to completion.
• Drive positive behavioural change through the implementation of ABB group-wide and business-specific HSE improvement programmes and initiatives.
• Promote and embed a strong health, safety, and environmental culture throughout the organisation.
• Lead and support HSE-related learning, awareness, and development activities to drive continuous improvement.
• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to strengthen HSE performance and share best practice.

• Experience coaching, supporting, and advising leaders and line managers on HSE matters.
• Proven ability to guide, motivate, and develop stakeholders, including direct and indirect reports, to support the successful implementation of HSE policies, standards, and programmes.
• Collaborative and proactive approach, with a passion for driving continuous improvement and a positive safety culture.
• Ambition to develop professionally and progress into broader HSE leadership responsibilities over time.
