Job summary

Hampshire County Council is seeking an Assistant Highway Engineer to support the Highways team in delivering the highways maintenance service across the county. The role involves assisting Highway Engineers with technical support, inspections, and raising works orders, with training and mentoring of junior staff.

You will travel to site, liaise with contractors and stakeholders, and contribute to emergency responses during severe weather or incidents.

Qualifications

• Appropriate highways experience and ability to manage workload with minimal supervision.
• Good customer care and communication skills are essential.
• Current driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle are required for travel.

Responsibilities

• Assist Highway Engineers with technical support, inspections and site audits.
• Raise works orders and monitor ongoing works.
• Mentor and train junior staff; coordinate with contractors and local stakeholders.
• Respond to emergencies and weather-related incidents as part of the team.
