Assistant Gardener (full time)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time Gardener (5 days a week), to work directly under the Head Gardener, on one of England’s historic and beautiful private estates.

Elton Hall is a family-owned Grade 1 listed building which opens to the public throughout the summer and also holds a few weddings and events. The gardens include formal lawns, herbaceous borders, an orangery, flower garden, water features, shrub garden, arboretum, wilderness garden, box & yew hedges and magnificent topiary. There is a thriving Plant Centre & Café in the Walled Garden which is under separate management.

The Assistant Gardener is a key member of the garden team ensuring that the gardens are presented and maintained to the highest standard. We are a small busy team and the ability to be able to be flexible during the summer months, is much appreciated. The successful candidate will possess some proven horticultural knowledge and experience including:

• Weeding and seasonal pruning and planting
• Hedge cutting
• Lawn mowing and border edging
• Watering (occasional weekends when necessary)
• Planting of annuals and bulbs
• Preferably have a spray certificate PA1 and PA6
• Using all types of garden machinery
• Leaf clearing, mulching and compost management
• Assist looking after all tools and keeping sheds/workplace tidy

You will need:

• To be physically fit and to have had horticultural experience
• Experience of using garden machinery
• Have a Spray certificate or be happy to go on a course
• To be highly organised and efficient at time management
• Happy to work outdoors whatever the weather
• Right to live and work in the UK
• Good level of spoken English & UK Driving Licence essential
• An understanding of Health & Safety requirements

Salary £25,000 and a two-bedroom house included

28 days paid holiday a year including Bank Holidays
