Job summary

NHS Scotland is recruiting for an Assistant Fire Safety Advisor to join the Architecture and Design team within Public Services Delivery Scotland. The post involves advising on fire safety issues, supporting NDAP and KSAR processes, and assisting with contract/consultant management to deliver outputs.

The ideal candidate has a fire engineering degree or equivalent experience, and a willingness to learn. The role includes home working, some nationwide travel, and a 36-hour week, Monday to Friday.

Assistant Fire Safety Advisor

On 1 April 2026, NHS National Services Scotland (NSS) and NHS Education for Scotland (NES) became one national organisation, focused on continuity today and a stronger, more connected service for tomorrow. As part of this transformation, NSS and NES have joined to form a new organisation: Public Services Delivery Scotland (PSD Scotland). This new organisation will play a pivotal role in supporting the renewal and ensuring the long-term sustainability of health and care services across Scotland.

About The Organisation

PSD Scotland unites expertise from NES and NSS in a way that will allow us to accelerate national programmes to support the NHS to deliver better care, now and in the future. We support staff with education and training, provide the tools and data that improve services, and run vital national functions such as procurement, logistics and blood, tissue and cell services.

The Post

The Assistant Fire Safety Advisor will work within the Architecture and Design team and will report to the National Fire Safety Advisors. The post holder is also expected to support senior staff with the management of a range of contractors/consultants and the delivery of outputs required from these contractors.

The role will involve varied work, including providing advice, guidance and support on a broad range of fire safety issues.

Supporting and providing technical assistance to the Design teams, fire safety advisors throughout the delivery of the Public Services Delivery Scotland Design Assessment Process (NDAP) and NHS Scotland Assure Key Stage Assurance Review (KSAR) process.

Assisting with the development and administration of NHS Scotland Guidance documentation.

Contributing to key initiatives by assisting in the research of good practice and innovative thinking in the field of fire safety relating to building design.

The Candidate

The candidate is required to have a degree in fire engineering or a related subject or can exhibit equivalent demonstrable experience in the fire safety sector.

Suitable candidates with fire safety sector experience and a willingness to learn will also be considered.

Location and Working Pattern:

The post holder will be based within a Public Services Delivery Scotland office but may be required to travel nationally in the course of the duties involved. An element of home working will be a feature of the role.

The work pattern for this post will be Monday to Friday, 36 hours per week.

It is a condition of this employment that you must live and remain a resident within the UK and have entitlement to work in the UK for the post in which you will be employed.
