Job summary

Penguin Random House Children's is seeking an Assistant Editor to join our new children's imprint in London. This is a rare opportunity to help build a dynamic publishing list from the ground up, collaborating with authors, illustrators and editors to shape books for young readers.

You will manage editorial workflows, read submissions, contribute ideas for series and projects, and work with design, production, sales and marketing to move titles from acquisition to publication.

Qualifications

  • Have a good understanding of audience and market
  • Publishing experience in an editorial department
  • Creative and curious - full of ideas and tuned into our audience’s interests
  • Highly organised - able to juggle multiple projects and deadlines with excellent attention to detail
  • Editorially minded - with a love of stories and language, and an instinct for what makes them work
  • Reader focussed - interested not only in whether a book is good, but who it is for and what could make readers choose it
  • Collaborative and flexible - a team player who adapts easily as priorities and projects evolve
  • Confident and proactive - comfortable asking questions, following things up and taking responsibility
  • Open-minded - a good problem solver who is excited by the idea that there may be more than one way to do something

Responsibilities

  • Managing editorial schedules and critical paths, keeping projects organised, information accurate and books moving towards publication
  • Providing editorial support across projects, including proofreading and second-eye checks, with the opportunity to take on increasing editorial responsibility as you develop
  • Working directly with authors, illustrators and agents, providing thoughtful and responsive stakeholder care
  • Writing and editing copy, metadata, presentations and other publishing materials
  • Attending key meetings as required, and communicating clearly with colleagues and external partners about project status and next steps
  • Working closely with colleagues across design, production, sales, marketing, publicity and rights
  • Reading submissions and contributing your perspective to editorial discussions
  • Contributing ideas for individual books, new series, original IP, positioning, packaging or ways to connect our publishing with readers
