Bloomsbury Education is seeking an enthusiastic, well-organised Assistant Editor with at least two years’ editorial experience to join our small team in London. You will manage individual book projects from commission to publication and support senior editors and the commissioning team.

You will project manage titles across a broad range of educational products, liaise with authors and production staff, and contribute to sales materials and events.

Job description

The opportunity:

Bloomsbury Education is looking for an enthusiastic, well-organised Assistant Editor with at least two years’ editorial experience to join our small dynamic team publishing exciting books for teachers, parents and children. The list includes teaching resources, professional development titles and home learning.

Reporting to the Head of Education and working closely with the editorial team this role offers the opportunity to progress your editorial skills and manage individual book projects from commission to publication, as well as assisting and supporting the commissioning team and senior editors as required.

The role:

  • Working with the commissioning team and senior editors to project manage titles across a broad range of educational products, from teaching resources and professional development books to children’s fiction and poetry, managing the editorial budget for individual titles to ensure profitability
  • Working with authors to ensure timely delivery of manuscripts and liaising with production staff to maintain publishing schedules and data in Biblio (our publishing database)
  • Development editing and copyediting new manuscripts independently, as well as alongside senior editor/commissioning editor
  • Proofreading and liaising with authors at proof stage, collating comments and corrections, feeding back to production and then checking off changes on revised proofs
  • Liaising with external and internal designers on page layouts, covers and artwork briefs, including storyboarding and illustrator selection
  • Supporting senior editors and commissioning editors with administrative and editorial tasks where needed
  • Assisting with the writing of AIs (advance information sheets), catalogue copy and book fair materials, as well as cover copy
  • Liaising with sales, production, design, marketing and editors to ensure that sales materials are produced on time
  • Presenting titles to sales and marketing teams at launch meetings and representing the education list at sales conferences and events as required

Knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Organised, confident and a good communicator
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language, high standards of accuracy and a keen eye for detail
  • Strong organisational skills and a rigorous, self-motivated approach to briefing, meeting deadlines and managing schedules and budgets
  • Able to prioritise and manage time effectively
  • Awareness of print procedures and printing needs
  • Awareness of cost limitations and profitability of a project
  • Demonstrable experience/knowledge of education publishing
