About The Role

Are you a recent graduate or early-career ecologist with a passion for terrestrial ecology? Do you enjoy outdoor work and field surveys to help protect Britain’s habitats and wildlife? Are you looking to develop species identification skills while contributing to conservation efforts?

Due to a recent promotion, we’re seeking an enthusiastic Assistant Ecologist to support our busy Terrestrial Ecology team. This hybrid role involves home, office, and site-based work across the South Midlands and South Wales, including Carmarthenshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, and Oxfordshire.

You will assist with various terrestrial ecology surveys, such as Phase 1 and UKHab habitat surveys, Preliminary Roost Assessments, and protected species work (bats, great crested newts, dormice, etc.). Additionally, you will support data analysis, reporting, and ecological mapping using GIS. This role offers hands-on experience with real projects for high-profile clients, helping you develop skills toward becoming a Consultant Ecologist.

To Be Successful In This Role, You’ll Need
  • A degree (or higher) in a relevant environmental or ecological subject
  • A passion for the environment and relevant ecological work experience
  • Knowledge of UK wildlife and environmental legislation
  • Field survey experience and confidence in data collection
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and report writing skills
  • A collaborative mindset and flexibility to work ecological hours (including early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends)
  • A full UK driving license and ability to travel, including overnight stays
Bonus Points If You Have
  • Experience with GIS tools (QGIS or ArcGIS)
  • Botanical ID skills or habitat classification experience
  • Experience in protected species surveys (e.g., bats, GCN, dormice, otters, water voles)
