Job description

About The Role

Are you a recent graduate or early-career ecologist with a passion for terrestrial ecology? Do you enjoy getting outdoors and conducting fieldwork to protect Britain's habitats and wildlife? Are you looking to develop your species identification skills while contributing to meaningful conservation projects?

Due to a recent promotion, we are seeking an enthusiastic Assistant Ecologist to support our busy Terrestrial Ecology team. This hybrid role involves home, office, and site-based work. Our long-standing contracts cover ecological surveys across the South Midlands and South Wales regions, including Carmarthenshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, and Oxfordshire.

In this position, you will assist with various terrestrial ecology surveys, such as Phase 1 and UKHab habitat surveys, Preliminary Roost Assessments, and protected species work (bats, great crested newts, dormice, and more). You will also support data analysis, reporting, and ecological mapping using GIS. Working within a friendly and experienced team, you'll gain practical experience on real projects for high-profile clients and develop a broad skillset guiding you toward a Consultant Ecologist role.

To be successful, you'll need:
  • A degree (or higher) in a relevant environmental or ecological subject
  • A passion for the environment, supported by relevant ecological work experience
  • Knowledge of UK wildlife and environmental legislation
  • Some field survey experience and confidence in data collection
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and report-writing skills
  • A collaborative mindset and flexibility to work ecological hours (including early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends)
  • A full UK driving license and the ability to travel, including overnight stays
Bonus points if you have:
  • Experience with GIS tools (QGIS or ArcGIS)
  • Botanical ID skills or habitat classification experience
  • Experience with protected species surveys (e.g., bats, GCN, dormice, otters, water voles)

We offer the opportunity to work on diverse projects, many of which align with personal interests. We are committed to your ongoing development and learning, supporting your career growth. Benefits include private medical insurance, access to mental health first aiders, comprehensive income protection, and flexible working arrangements to promote work-life balance.
