Job summary

SSEN Transmission in Scotland is seeking an Assistant Consents and Environment Manager (Operations) to support our Networks team in maintaining assets through their life cycle and to enable Scotland’s renewable energy ambitions.

You will work with environmental legislation, manage consenting oversight, monitor Biodiversity Net Gain, and build partnerships with stakeholders while delivering compliant, cost-aware projects.

Qualifications

  • Experience with obtaining ecological permits and licences.
  • Degree in ecological discipline is essential; postgraduate qualifications are advantageous.
  • Experience in infrastructure, statutory bodies, or consultancy helps with delivery of environmental conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Support operational teams in maintaining the network, ensuring ecological consenting and environmental requirements are identified and integrated into asset management systems.
  • Collaborate with the Consents and Environment team to ensure enduring ecological planning conditions are understood early to facilitate project handover.
  • Implement monitoring regimes for Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and protected species and provide advice to operational teams to meet goals.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including project teams and statutory authorities.

As an Assistant Consents and Environment Manager (Operations), you will join our team and play an essential role in enabling Scotland’s renewable energy ambitions, supporting our Networks team to maintain our assets through their operational life cycle.

You will
  • Support operational teams in maintaining the network, ensuring all ecological consenting and environmental requirements are identified, understood, and integrated into asset management systems.
  • Collaborate with the wider Consents and Environment team to ensure that all enduring ecological planning conditions are fully understood at an early stage to facilitate effective project handover.
  • Implement proportionate monitoring regimes for Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and protected species and provide advice to Operational teams where necessary, to ensure goals and targets are met.
  • Build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including operational teams, project teams and statutory authorities.
You have
  • Knowledge of environmental legislation and consenting regimes, alongside relevant work experience.
  • Proven project management skills, including consenting oversight, environmental compliance, consultant management, cost control, risk management, quality oversight, and programme coordination.
  • A degree (or equivalent) in an ecological discipline, ideally complemented by a postgraduate qualification, with experience gained in sectors such as infrastructure, statutory bodies, or consultancy.
  • Experience with obtaining ecological permits and licences and working with the business to ensure appropriate mitigation is implemented.
  • A proactive and adaptable approach, with the ability to embrace challenges and opportunities within a changing environment.
