The firm has been growing steadily over the last few years and we are looking for fully qualified auditors. Assistant audit managers work as part of our audit team delivering client work and provide coaching to less experienced colleagues.
About the role
Assistant audit managers work with the partners and audit managers to deliver high-quality services to clients. They also support managers in management tasks, ensuring that the audit team makes best use of each member’s time and that work is undertaken at the right level.
Staff working in this role will be following a progression programme to develop their knowledge and skills so that they can aim to progress to an audit manager role.
As with all technical roles you are expected to undertake regular CPD work, studies and training to ensure you are compliant with institute requirements and understand and can operate effectively within the environment in which we operate.
Responsibilities
General
- Follow firm’s policies and procedures on all work to achieve high standards and deliver an excellent service to clients
- Adhere to firm’s standards on independence and professional ethics
- Keep managers and partners regularly informed of activities, capacity and progress on assignments to ensure that time is fully utilised
- Participate in meetings as appropriate, playing an active part in internal briefing and de-brief sessions
- Any other tasks in line with the responsibilities of the role
Assisting managers
- Review audit plans prepared by audit staff; ensure that the planned audit approach and audit testing is expected to provide sufficient audit evidence for us to form our audit opinion, that the quoted fee conforms to the firm’s pricing policy, and then recommend the plans and documents for approval by the manager
- Review audit work either on-site or in the office, reporting to the responsible manager
- Attend on-site meetings with clients to identify additional help needed by client, changes to the scope of our work and to plan how we shall deliver such work
- Work with managers and partners to deliver advice and support assignments, covering tax, VAT, due diligence, investigations, systems reviews and other work, documenting work appropriately and preparing draft reports
- Research new work enquiries and document, attend pre-tender meetings and document, and prepare draft proposals for new work
- Undertake other work delegated by managers and partners as required
Involvement in the audit and advisory community within the firm
- Participate in technical groups and assist in the production of technical updates
- Participate in sector groups and related events
- Participate in staff training and deliver training sessions
- Participate in reviews of audit processes and working groups
- Attend internal meetings as necessary and assist in the preparation and management of them
Person specification
Qualifications
- Qualified chartered accountant (ACA) with good exam record, ideally first-time passes
- Diploma in Charity Accounting or willingness to work towards obtaining the Diploma within a reasonable timeframe
- At least three years’ experience of working on audit assignments
- At least one years’ experience of supervising staff on audit assignments
- At least one years’ experience of planning and completing audit assignments, including write up of all necessary documents, i.e. delivering the full audit process for clients
Skills and knowledge
- A thorough knowledge of accounting and auditing standards, relevant practice notes, as well as charity specific guidance such as SORP and Charity Commission guidance
- Ability to gain a thorough knowledge of the firm’s processes for delivering services to clients, as represented by manuals and guidance on our intranet
- Ability to gain a working knowledge of firm’s internal management processes, such as sales process, administrative procedures
- Working knowledge of the tax, VAT and legal frameworks within which charities work, including areas such as company secretarial and internal control
- Knowledge of the charity sector and the drivers and issues for clients in target group
- Successful experience of briefing staff clearly and concisely when supervising
- Successful experience of supporting staff and reviewing their work on assignments
- Able to make judgements and develop solutions to problems
- Able to present information clearly and concisely to managers for decision
- Good oral communication skills for liaison internally and externally
- Good written communication skills and able to present ideas in writing to a wide range of audiences
- Successful experience of writing short reports for client assignments
- Experience of showing initiative and working autonomously for some aspects of the work
- Experience of working collaboratively with colleagues and clients
- Willingness to share knowledge spontaneously and proactively develop the skills of colleagues, particularly trainees
- Ability to prioritise own work effectively, planning time and assignments effectively to meet client deadlines and internal deadlines
