Job summary

VolkerRail is seeking a diligent Assistant Accountant to join our Doncaster head office finance team. You will support month-end activities, intercompany reporting, balance sheet reconciliations and routine statutory tasks to ensure accurate financial records.

Ideal candidates will have strong numeracy, Excel skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities with a proactive approach and good communication across the business.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 5 GCSEs, including strong numeracy.
• AAT qualification (or working towards) would be advantageous.
• Previous experience within a finance, accounts or business environment is desirable.
• Strong Microsoft Excel skills and confidence working with data and reports.
• Excellent attention to detail with the ability to produce accurate work to tight deadlines.
• Good organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
• A proactive, self-motivated approach with a willingness to learn and take ownership of tasks.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to build effective working relationships across the business.
• A results-driven mindset with a commitment to seeing tasks through to completion.

Responsibilities

• Supporting the Corporate Finance Team across a range of accounting and financial activities.
• Assisting with month-end processes, including intercompany balance reporting, orderbook reporting, and the posting of interest and tax journals.
• Preparing and maintaining balance sheet reconciliations and supporting documentation for review.
• Reviewing and reporting on financial journals to ensure accuracy and compliance.
• Extracting, analysing and presenting financial and business data to support management reporting.
• Assisting with the production of training reports, headcount analysis and statutory accounts for dormant companies.
• Supporting external reporting obligations, including submissions to the Office for National Statistics.
• Carrying out bank account verification checks and other financial compliance activities.
• Providing cover for weekly payment runs, including processing payments and liaising with Accounts Payable teams.
• Contributing to continuous improvement within the finance function and supporting ad hoc projects as required.

VolkerRail is a leading multidisciplinary railway infrastructure contractor on heavy and light rail networks.

Our ability to continually deliver projects, from smaller contracts through to our involvement in nationally significant major schemes, has helped our clients bring communities together and provide better services for passengers.

VolkerRail comprises two businesses: Major Projects, which is expert in collaborative working and leads on large, multidisciplinary joint venture and alliance projects; and Specialist Businesses, made up of expert divisions in signalling, track, power, electrification and piling, with an in-house plant division and bespoke design teams. These work independently, as subcontractors to the rail sector, or collectively as a Tier One contractor for larger frameworks. We are currently seeking an Assistant Accountant to join our Finance team at our Doncaster Head Office.

As an Assistant Accountant, you will play a key role in supporting the Finance Team and ensuring the smooth operation of our financial processes. Your responsibilities will include:
