Job summary

Confidential, a well‑established engineering business in Cardiff, is seeking an Assistant Accountant. You will work with the Finance Manager and team to produce financial information, maintain controls and support day‑to‑day accounting activities.

The role offers exposure to management accounts, reconciliations, reporting and operational finance, with opportunities to progress in your finance career within a collaborative environment.

Qualifications

• Experience in assistant accountant roles or finance officer positions.
• Strong knowledge of reconciliations, journals and month‑end processes.
• Good working knowledge of double-entry bookkeeping and Excel.

Responsibilities

• Assist with monthly management accounts preparation.
• Complete balance sheet and control account reconciliations.
• Prepare journals, accruals and prepayments and support month‑end processes.
• Support budgeting, forecasting and financial reporting.
• Monitor project and operational costs and assist with cashflow analysis.
• Support audit preparation and respond to finance queries.

Your new role

Working closely with the Finance Manager and wider finance team, you will play a key role in supporting the production of financial information, maintaining strong financial controls and ensuring the accuracy of day-to-day accounting activities. This is a varied role offering exposure to management accounts, reconciliations, reporting and operational finance, making it ideal for someone looking to continue progressing their finance career.

Your responsibilities

• Assisting with the preparation of monthly management accounts
• Completing balance sheet and control account reconciliations
• Preparing journals, accruals and prepayments
• Supporting month-end and year-end accounting processes
• Assisting with budgeting and forecasting activities
• Producing financial reports and analysis for management
• Monitoring project and operational costs
• Supporting cashflow reporting and expenditure analysis
• Maintaining fixed asset records and supporting capital expenditure reporting
• Assisting with audit preparation and responding to finance queries
• Supporting process improvement initiatives across the finance function
• Working closely with operational stakeholders to provide financial insight and support

What you'll need to succeed

• Previous experience within an Assistant Accountant, Accounts Assistant or Finance Officer position
• Strong understanding of reconciliations, journals and month-end processes
• Good working knowledge of double-entry bookkeeping
• Strong Microsoft Excel skills
• Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
• Strong communication skills and ability to work with stakeholders across the business

Desirable

• AAT qualified or actively studying ACCA/CIMA
• Experience supporting management accounts
• Exposure to budgeting and forecasting
• Experience working within engineering, manufacturing or project-led environments
• Experience using ERP or integrated finance systems
