Job summary

West College Scotland is seeking an Assessor in Engineering to manage a caseload of learners undertaking Modern Apprenticeships and SVQs across electrical, mechanical or technical support engineering.

The role includes workplace assessments, documentation, and regular site visits to support candidates and employers; the position offers hybrid working with campus and employer-site locations in Scotland.

Qualifications

  • Minimum SCQF Level 7 qualification in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Technical Support Engineering.
  • Technical competence in the listed engineering vocational areas with practical skills and knowledge.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills with ability to engage a diverse range of candidates and employers.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, organise and plan a caseload of learners undertaking Modern Apprenticeships and SVQs.
  • Monitor candidate progress; arrange and conduct workplace assessments using various techniques.
  • Maintain accurate records of assessments and ensure documentation complies with policy and verification requirements.
  • Carry out regular workplace visits to support and assess candidates and employers.

(Initial salary placement will be on the first point of the scale and will increase by annual incremental progression)

Location: Hybrid/WCS Campuses/Employer sites

We are excited to expand our existing Skills Programmes Engineering team to recruit an Assessor who has demonstrable occupational experience in one or more of the following disciplines: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Technical Support Engineering.

Key aspects of the role will include:
  • Management, organisation and planning of a caseload of Engineering learners undertaking Modern Apprenticeships as well as stand-alone SVQs at varied stages on their qualification journey to aim for successful completion whilst ensuring contract compliance.
  • Monitoring candidate progress, arranging and conducting assessments in the workplace using a variety of assessment techniques.
  • Maintaining accurate records of assessments, ensuring all documentation is processed according to College policies and in line with internal and external verification requirements.
  • Carrying out regular workplace visits to support and assess candidates, fostering strong relationships with both candidates and employers.
  • Engaging in the standardisation of assessment evidence to ensure consistency and quality.
  • Communicating progress effectively with candidates' line managers, while adhering to strict deadlines and quality standards.
  • Due to the sensitive nature of some of our employers, security clearance checks will be carried out on appointment.
Applicant essentials include:
  • Minimum SCQF Level 7 (e.g. HNC) qualification in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Technical Support Engineering.
  • Technical competence in one or more of the Engineering vocational areas as shown above. Technical competence is deemed as having a combination of practical skills, knowledge, and the ability to apply both, in familiar and new situations, within a real working environment.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills, with the ability to engage effectively with a diverse range of candidates and employers.
  • Demonstrable experience of working towards the achievement of targets and have experience of working on own initiative and as part of a team.
  • Clean driving licence and use of own car for business purposes.
  • Applicants who do not have a current Assessor qualification or equivalent will be required to undergo achievement of this qualification within 12 months of commencing in the role. Full details of the skills and qualifications required can be found on the employee specification.
