Job summary

Milk Education in Crawley is seeking an Aspiring Psychologist - Learning Support Assistant to work with pupils aged 4-16 who may struggle with emotional regulation, social skills and engagement. You will support students one-to-one or in small groups, assisting teachers and applying calm, trauma-informed approaches.

The role offers hands-on experience for graduates in Psychology, Criminology or related fields, with full training provided.

Qualifications

• A degree in Psychology, Criminology, Youth & Community Work or a related subject is desirable.
• Graduates considering careers in Psychology, Criminal Justice, Youth Justice, Social Work or Mental Health are particularly encouraged to apply.
• Graduates are welcome, but relevant experience in youth work, mentoring, social care or education will also be considered.
• A genuine interest in supporting vulnerable children and young people.
• A calm, patient and resilient approach, with the ability to remain composed during challenging situations.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to build relationships with young people.
• Experience working with SEMH, challenging behaviour or vulnerable young people is desirable but not essential, as full training and support will be provided.
• Most importantly, we are looking for someone who is genuine about wanting to make a difference. Understanding why you want to work with some of the most vulnerable children in society is just as important as your qualifications.

Responsibilities

• Build strong, positive relationships with pupils to encourage trust and engagement.
• Support young people to understand and manage their emotions and behaviour.
• Provide academic and emotional support on a one-to-one or small-group basis.
• Support pupils who may be at risk of exclusion to remain engaged with education.
• Assist teachers with lessons and classroom activities.
• Use positive behaviour strategies, restorative approaches and de-escalation techniques.
• Help pupils develop confidence, independence and important life skills.
• Support young people to develop strategies that will help them both in and outside of school.
