Job description

ASD Teaching Assistant | Epping | September 2026

Are you an aspiring graduate or experienced Teaching Assistant with a passion for supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)?

Are you looking to gain valuable classroom experience before pursuing a career in teaching, Educational Psychology, or specialist SEND support?

An inclusive and supportive primary school in Epping is looking to appoint enthusiastic and compassionate ASD Teaching Assistants to join their team from September 2026. This ASD Teaching Assistant opportunity is ideal for individuals who are passionate about supporting children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADHD, and additional learning needs within a nurturing and inclusive school environment.

As an ASD Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with pupils on a 1:1 basis and in small groups, helping them access the curriculum, develop their communication skills, and build confidence and independence. The successful ASD Teaching Assistant will collaborate with class teachers, the SENDCo, and other professionals to provide tailored support that enables every pupil to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Main responsibilities of an ASD Teaching Assistant:
  • Supporting primary school pupils with ASD, ADHD, and other additional learning needs.

  • Providing dedicated 1:1 and small-group support to meet individual learning needs.

  • Assisting class teachers and the SENDCo in implementing personalised learning strategies and support plans.

  • Creating a positive, safe, and engaging learning environment where all pupils feel included.

  • Encouraging communication, social interaction, emotional regulation, and independence.

  • Adapting classroom activities and resources to support pupils with different learning styles and needs.

  • Building positive relationships with pupils, staff, and external SEND professionals.

The ideal ASD Teaching Assistant will have:
  • A degree in Psychology, Education, or a related subject, or relevant experience supporting children with SEND.

  • Previous child-centred experience, ideally within a school, care, mentoring, or support setting.

  • A genuine passion for supporting autistic children and pupils with additional needs.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, alongside patience, empathy, and resilience.

  • A proactive and flexible approach to supporting pupils with diverse learning needs.

  • Aspirations towards teaching, Educational Psychology, speech and language therapy, or a long-term career in SEND education.

This ASD Teaching Assistant role offers an excellent opportunity to develop practical classroom skills, gain specialist experience supporting autistic pupils, and build a strong foundation for future training or further study. Whether you are a recent graduate looking to strengthen your application for a Master’s programme or an aspiring educator seeking meaningful school-based experience, this position provides the opportunity to make a genuine difference to children's educational journeys.

If you are a caring, motivated, and enthusiastic individual looking to begin or develop your career in education, this ASD Teaching Assistant opportunity in Epping could be the perfect next step.
