Job summary

NHS Blood and Transplant in Oxford is seeking an Area Session Sister / Charge Nurse to lead donor-facing teams across the Donor Centre and surrounding areas. You will ensure safe, high-quality donor care while coaching staff to achieve performance and safety objectives.

You will work 75 hours per fortnight over 9.5-hour shifts, covering Oxford, Slough, Reading and Swindon, with a flexible hybrid working approach and a strong focus on governance, risk management and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

• Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.

Job description

As an Area Session Sister / Charge Nurse with NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), you will play a vital role in helping to save and improve lives by leading blood donation teams across your area. You will provide expert clinical leadership, making sure donors receive safe, high-quality care while supporting your team to deliver excellent results. Working at the heart of the donation journey, you will oversee session performance, donor eligibility, regulatory compliance and service quality. You will be the clinical expert on session, supporting colleagues, managing risk and championing continuous improvement. The working hours for this role are 75 hours per fortnight over 9.5-hour shifts. As an Area Nurse, your start and finish times will vary to support operational needs across different teams. You will be working Monday to Sunday including weekends and bank holidays, and you will be based at Oxford Donor Centre, covering the following areas: Slough, Reading And Swindon. Main duties of the job

• Lead donor-facing teams to deliver a safe, high-quality donation experience that puts donors and patients at the centre of everything you do.
• Use your clinical expertise to guide donor assessment, eligibility decisions and the management of adverse events, helping to ensure donor and product safety.
• Support and develop colleagues through coaching, mentoring, feedback and training, helping them learn, grow and succeed in their roles.
• Drive quality and regulatory compliance by promoting best practice, identifying improvements and supporting change across donor sessions.
• Analyse performance information, respond to emerging issues and take action to help teams achieve operational and quality objectives.
• Act as a visible clinical leader and role model, creating a positive culture that reflects NHSBT values of caring, expertise and quality.
• Build strong relationships with donors, colleagues and stakeholders, communicating clearly and confidently in a range of situations.

  Registered Nurse with current Nursing and Midwifery Council registration (Part 1 Adult/General, Level 1 or Level 2).
• Evidence of ongoing professional development and continued learning applied in practice.
• Experience of managing clinical environments within a regulatory framework, including Blood Safety and Quality Regulations (BSQR) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).
• Valid driving licence permitting travel within the UK.
• Willingness to travel across an agreed geographical area and work irregular hours, including occasional overnight stays when required., Credible leadership experience within a clinical environment, with the ability to motivate and support teams.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to influence, negotiate and build positive relationships.
• Experience of managing people, implementing change and working towards performance objectives and organisational targets.
• Strong analytical, judgement and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess risk and make sound decisions.
• Demonstrable knowledge of patient safety, risk management and delivering excellent donor-focused care.
