Harrow School in London seeks an experienced and registered Archivist to manage the school’s historic archive. You will acquire new items, preserve, catalogue and store the collection, and support researchers and staff.
The role is part-time, 24 hours per week across 39 weeks per year (term-time plus six weeks holidays). Opportunities to create exhibitions and displays, and to work with a range of internal teams. Benefits include lunch, parking and pension.
Harrow School is situated within a beautiful site in Harrow on the Hill, north west London, and is one of the best-known schools in the world, with around 840 boys studying at Harrow. This unique school archive was set up in 1981. It was created to collect and preserve records relating to the history of the School with the intention of making the information accessible to future generations. The archive contains material reflecting the organisation and development of the School from its founding by John Lyon in 1572 up to the present.
It is an integral part of the School and its community containing documents and collections relating to the history of all aspects of School life as well as being used as a study resource by the Harrow School boys, staff and researchers in conjunction with the Vaughan Library and Old Speech Room Gallery.
We are seeking an experienced, qualified and registered Archivist to ensure the effective running of the School’s archive. The Archivist is responsible for acquiring new items, preserving, cataloguing and storing the collection. There are opportunities to produce exhibitions and displays for the school and work with a range of staff and agencies within the Harrow school community. The archive is well used by academic researchers and handles a high number of enquiries about the school.
Candidates must be enthusiastic, highly organised with a keen attention to detail. They must possess excellent IT skills for maintaining and creating digital records using archival databases. Excellent communication skills are essential, evidence of working as part of a team, experience of successful time management and meeting deadlines.
