Job summary

Cotswold Archaeology invites applications for a Geomatics Officer to join the Geomatics department on a full time, permanent basis. The post holder will satisfy QA of digital field survey data and provide survey support across departments, working largely in the office and occasionally on site.

The role requires a degree in archaeology, extensive ESRI ArcGIS Pro knowledge, and GNSS/Total Station experience (Leica preferred).

Qualifications

• Degree or post-graduate qualification in Archaeology (or relevant subject).
• Experience as a field archaeologist on evaluations, watching briefs and excavations.
• Strong understanding of archaeological survey principles.
• Extensive knowledge of ESRI software, especially ArcGIS Pro.
• Experience using GNSS and Total Stations (preferably Leica) with field data.
• Clear description of observations and interpretations from surveying work.
• Excellent IT skills with Word, Excel, Access; able to meet deadlines.
• Commitment to professional archaeology standards and team collaboration.
• Willingness to undertake away work and occasional overnight stays.

Responsibilities

• Ensure successful and safe conduct of digital field survey and data QA.
• Maintain field survey equipment and ensure data digitisation quality.
• Digitise site records and present archaeological data using CAD/GIS.
• Carry out field survey and on-site data collection tasks as required.
• Oversee instrument allocation and purchasing with external hire companies.
• Coordinate staff training in survey, GIS and CAD skills.
• Contribute to project organisation and fieldwork programming.
• Observe fire and health and safety regulations and risk assessments.
• Implement Cotswold Archaeology policies and standards.
