Job Description

Summary

We are the public body that looks after England’s historic environment. We champion historic places, helping people understand, value and care for them.

This is an exciting opportunity to join our Archaeological Archives Team (AAT)—a team unlike any other in UK archaeology. Based within our Archaeological Investigation Team, the AAT brings together expertise in archive management, digital data creation and archiving, and the publication of the Historic England Research Report Series.

As a Temporary Archaeological Archives Curator, you will take responsibility for managing and preparing archive material for deposition from Historic England excavation and research projects.

The Archaeological Investigation Team is made up of five specialist groups: Archaeological Archives, Archaeological Excavation, Geophysics, Landscape Archaeology, and Aerial Survey. As part of this team, you will have the opportunity to contribute to and influence national initiatives and projects.

We offer a wide benefits package including a competitive pension scheme starting at 28.97% employer contributions, a generous 28 days holiday, corporate discounts, free entry into English Heritage sites across the country and development opportunities to ensure you achieve your goals.

What you will be doing

Working with our archaeological teams, including Investigative Science, you will:

•Manage the archaeological archiving process, advising project teams through the course of a project and taking responsibility for completing archive compilation and transfer.

•Oversee collections management, including documentation, loans and returns, monitoring storage conditions, and facilitating access to collections.

•Provide expert advice and contribute to our programme of project completion and archive transfer.

Who we are looking for:

•You have a strong understanding of archaeological post-excavation procedures and demonstrable experience in collections management, including documentation, storage systems, and environments.

• You are familiar with existing standards in archaeological archiving and have experience managing excavation archives, including digital materials.

•You enjoy building relationships, working collaboratively, and supporting colleagues across teams.

•You are committed to Historic England’s strategic aims, particularly in the area of archaeological research and preservation.

Please note your application will be scored and assessed against the above criteria.

We are an equal opportunity employer which values diversity and inclusion. If you have a disability or neurodiversity, we would be happy to discuss reasonable adjustments to the job with you. Having just won the Gold Award from MIND, we also recognise the importance of a healthy work-life balance.

We are an inclusive employer and believe that flexible working options are for everyone. We want to make sure our working arrangements don’t prevent anyone from joining us because of their personal circumstances. We also want to provide you with the best balance in your home and work life that we can.

We are open to considering options including job sharing, part-time working, compressed hours working and different working locations, including hybrid working. Please visit our jobs pages or contact us to find out more.

Why work for Historic England
