Job summary

Fenland District Council offers an exciting opportunity to join our Environmental Services team as an Apprentice Workshop Technician. Through this structured 3 year apprenticeship, you will develop the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to become a qualified Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) Technician while working alongside experienced professionals in a busy workshop environment.

As part of your development, you will also have the opportunity to undertake HGV driver training, helping you build

• Full UK driving licence
• Knowledge of vehicle maintenance and workshop practices to Level 2/3
• Commitment to attending college one day per week throughout apprenticeship

• Inspect, service, maintain, diagnose and repair a range of vehicles, plant and equipment
• Learn to conduct vehicle inspections and compliance checks

Job description

Fenland District Council is offering an exciting opportunity to join our Environmental Services team as an Apprentice Workshop Technician. Through this structured 3 year apprenticeship programme, you will develop the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to become a qualified Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) Technician while working alongside experienced professionals in a busy workshop environment.

As part of your development, you will also have the opportunity to undertake HGV driver training, helping you build a broad range of skills to support your future career.

About the Role

Working within our established workshop team, you will learn how to inspect, service, maintain, diagnose, and repair a wide variety of vehicles, plant, and equipment, including:

• Heavy and light goods vehicles
• Refuse collection vehicles
• Sweepers
• Vans
• Plant and machinery
• Sewage treatment works and pumping station equipment

Throughout your apprenticeship, you will gain practical experience while studying towards a recognised qualification and attending college one day per week.

You will develop skills in:

• Vehicle servicing and repairs
• Fault finding and diagnostics
• Planned and preventative maintenance
• Vehicle inspections and compliance checks
• Safe working practices and workshop procedures
• Customer service and teamwork

By the end of the programme, you will have gained valuable technical expertise and a strong foundation for a rewarding career in vehicle maintenance and engineering.

Essential Requirements

• GCSE Grade 4/C or above in English and Mathematics (or equivalent)
• Full UK driving licence
• Knowledge of vehicle maintenance and workshop practices to Level 2/3
• Commitment to attending college one day per week throughout the apprenticeship
• Ability to work safely and follow health and safety procedures
• Good organisational and communication skills
• Right to work in the UK
