Job summary

Fareham Borough Council is offering an Apprentice Fleet Technician role in a busy fleet workshop. You will learn to inspect, service and repair vehicles, including HGVs, while working toward a Level 3 Motor Vehicle Service & Maintenance Technician (Heavy) qualification.

The program blends practical on‑the‑job training with formal study. You will gain experience using diagnostic equipment, contributing to MOT readiness and maintaining braking, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems.

Qualifications

• GCSEs in Maths and English (or equivalent).
• Interest in Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) or vehicle maintenance would be advantageous, though full training will be provided.
• Willing to study towards the Level 3 qualification and develop hands-on skills.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, service and repair a range of vehicles within a busy fleet workshop.
• Use specialist diagnostic equipment to identify faults and plan repairs.
• Prepare vehicles for MOT and maintain critical systems such as brakes, hydraulics, pneumatics and electrical components.
• Demonstrate safe work practices, follow instructions and show a strong work ethic.

About The Role

As an Apprentice Fleet Technician, you will work alongside our experienced Transport Repair Unit team to help maintain, service and repair the Council's diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment, including Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs). This is an excellent opportunity to develop practical skills and gain hands‑on experience whilst studying towards a Level 3 Motor Vehicle Service & Maintenance Technician (Heavy) qualification.

You will learn how to inspect, service and repair a range of vehicles, use specialist diagnostic equipment, prepare vehicles for MOT, and support the maintenance of key systems such as brakes, hydraulics, pneumatics and electrical components. Working in a busy fleet workshop, you will play an important role in helping to ensure vehicles remain safe, compliant and available to deliver essential services to our communities.

This apprenticeship combines practical workplace experience with formal training, providing a structured pathway into a rewarding career within the motor vehicle industry.

About You

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual who has a genuine interest in vehicle maintenance and mechanics. You will be keen to learn, willing to develop new skills and committed to working safely and professionally at all times.

The successful candidate will have good communication and teamwork skills, a positive attitude, strong attention to detail and a willingness to take pride in their work. You should be able to follow instructions, demonstrate a strong work ethic and be committed to completing the apprenticeship programme.
