Qualifications

  • Two National 4 qualifications including English and Maths.
  • Two National 5 qualifications in any subject, or a National Certificate in Land-Based Engineering.
  • You must be aged 16 or over.
  • Practical experience with machinery, vehicles, tools or mechanical projects.

Responsibilities

  • Learn to service, maintain and repair agricultural machinery and equipment.
  • Build fault-finding skills using diagnostic technology and workshop tools.
  • Assemble and prepare new and used machinery for customer delivery.
  • Inspect, clean and valet machinery to a high standard.
  • Support workshop maintenance and other day-to-day engineering tasks.
  • Follow safe working practices and manufacturer procedures at all times.
  • Learn from experienced engineers across a wide range of machinery and technology.

Job description

Agricultural engineering is a skilled career with machinery, technology and problem-solving at its heart. You’ll learn alongside experienced Hamilton Ross engineers while working towards the qualifications and practical experience you need to become a fully qualified Agricultural Service Engineer.

  • Depot: Berwick, Northumberland or Kelso, Scottish Borders
  • Hours: Monday to Friday, 39 hours per week. Overtime available.
  • Reports to: Agricultural Service Manager
  • Contract: Permanent

Hamilton Ross Group is one of the UK’s largest machinery dealerships. We have been trading since 1933, we are in our third generation of family ownership, and around 200 people work with us across nine depots in Scotland and the north of England. We represent major brands like Massey Ferguson, Valtra, Fendt, JCB, Wacker Neuson, Kubota, Honda, Stihl and Husqvarna.

The role

You’ll start in our workshop team, working alongside experienced engineers and building practical skills across agricultural machinery. You’ll learn how to service, maintain, diagnose and repair equipment, as well as how to prepare machinery safely and to a high standard for customers.

As your skills develop, you’ll work towards a fully funded Agricultural Engineering Apprenticeship delivered in partnership with Scotland’s Rural College, Barony Campus. You’ll combine hands‑on workshop experience with structured learning, mentoring and industry‑recognised qualifications, giving you a clear route into a long-term engineering career.

What you’ll bring
  • A genuine interest in machinery, engineering and developing practical technical skills
  • A reliable, self-motivated approach and willingness to learn from others
  • The ability to work carefully, follow instructions and contribute as part of a team
  • A minimum of two National 4 qualifications including English and Mathematics, plus two National 5 qualifications in any subject, or a National Certificate in Land-Based Engineering
  • You must be aged 16 or over
  • Practical experience with machinery, vehicles, tools or mechanical projects
  • An interest in agriculture or agricultural machinery
  • Previous work experience in a workshop, farm or engineering environment
