Job summary

Debére is offering an Apprenticeship Accounts Assistant in Washington, Tyne & Wear. You’ll train on the job while supporting the team to handle transactions, VAT returns, and basic accounts work. Expect a structured apprenticeship with study time and hands-on experience.

The role starts 7 September 2026 and runs for 1 year, with 37.5 hours per week and a starting wage of £15,600 in year one. Training provider is ACCESS TRAINING LIMITED, with potential progression to higher levels.

Qualifications

  • English and Maths at grade 6 or above.
  • Strong communication and organisation required.
  • Teamwork, punctuality and reliability needed.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) is beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Process company and sole trader transactions.
  • Prepare VAT returns and assist with accounts and tax computations.
  • Occasionally assist with payroll tasks for clients.
  • Liaise with clients by telephone and email to provide updates.

Wage

£15,600 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You'll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work
  • Processing company and sole trader transactions
  • Preparation of VAT returns
  • Preparation of annual accounts and corporation tax computations
  • Occasional processing of payroll for clients
  • Liaising with clients on the telephone
  • Sending & receiving emails
  • Use of Microsoft Office to include: Excel and Word
  • Will be trained how to use bespoke company software (Sage 50 Payroll, Sage 50, Sage Cloud, Xero, CCH and Alphatax)

  • Use the organisation's standard tools and processes to examine data to identify transactional issues, such as reconciliations and inconsistencies between invoices.
  • Recognise and rectify routine errors, escalating as necessary.
  • Plan and review accounting and finance tasks.
  • Communicate with stakeholders to deliver accurate and timely results, avoiding jargon, using language tailored to the audience, and different media methods, with an appreciation of the risks and benefits to the business of social media and other digital applications.
  • Use finance and accounting software packages to accurately input and manage data to contribute to routine accounting tasks.
  • Handle data and digital technology in line with cyber and data security requirements, using data securely and safely, including backing up data.

Training schedule

The successful applicant will work towards the Accounts/Finance Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard.

Will be required to attend day release at Access Training on Team Valley, Gateshead.
