Applied Ocean Modeller and Model Product Specialist – National Oceanography Centre

Marine Data Products Team, National Oceanography Centre (NOC), Liverpool

About the role:

The National Oceanography Centre is an international leader in the development and application of coastal-ocean numerical models and shelf sea science. We are looking to recruit an applied coastal-ocean modeller to work in the Marine Data Products Team at the NOC in Liverpool. The successful applicant will work on developing, testing and applying the wide range of ocean models including in-house developed code, community developed models such as NEMO and other hydrodynamic models to meet the diverse range of commercial requirements.

  • responding to commercial and academic requests for coastal modelling work for a wide range of physical parameters, primarily focusing on tides and storm surges.
  • working with models to meet a variety of client requirements, such as tide modelling, storm surge modelling, particle tracking and oil/chemical spill modelling across a wide range of industry sectors.
  • developing new regional models for areas of the world where there is a commercial demand.
  • developing software tools to make the setting up of models a more efficient process.
  • working directly with clients to deal with technical enquiries relating to ocean modelling.

You will also work closely with other organisations such as the Met Office to ensure that the NOC has the appropriate data available to be able to handle a wide range of commercial projects and carry out any appropriate data processing, analysis and interpretation of data to meet end-user requirements.

This post is offered on NERC terms and conditions and is available for 2 years.

This is a Band 6 position and the starting salary will be £28,200 per annum and depending upon skills and experience, a salary uplift and/or additional allowances may be available for exceptional candidates.

About you

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, enthusiastic and outgoing ocean modeller with an eagerness to work in a team and take on a diverse range of modelling challenges. You will be highly numerate, have a PhD or equivalent research record and knowledge of shelf sea physical oceanographic processes. You will have a degree in physical sciences, mathematics or oceanography and demonstrated programming skills. Good written and verbal communication skills are essential. A proven ability in scientific publication would be advantageous.

The Marine Products Team is a self-financing team within the NOC which provides products and services to both the commercial and academic sector. The team is looking to branch out into more bespoke modelling and this post will form a key part of this.
