Job summary

CBSbutler is seeking an experienced Applications Engineer to deliver hands-on engineering support within a secure MOD/Defence environment in Corsham. You will design, deploy, configure and manage enterprise applications across Windows and Linux, ensuring integration with AD/LDAP, databases and networking.

The role requires current SC or DV clearance, experience with deployment lifecycles, and a strong emphasis on security hardening and formal runbooks.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in UK MOD/Defence environment is essential.
• Strong experience in application installation, configuration and support for enterprise environments.
• Experience with Windows and/or Linux server environments.
• Knowledge of integrating applications with Active Directory, databases and web services.
• Experience supporting development, test and production environments.
• Understanding of application security and hardening.

Responsibilities

We are seeking an experienced Applications Engineer with strong UK MOD/Defence experience to provide hands‑on engineering support within a complex, secure enterprise environment.

The successful candidate will support the design, deployment, configuration and lifecycle management of enterprise applications across secure environments, covering integration, testing, deployment and ongoing operational support.

Key Responsibilities

• Deploy, configure and support enterprise applications across Windows and/or Linux environments.
• Manage application lifecycle activities including installation, patching, upgrades and decommissioning.
• Integrate applications with enterprise services including Active Directory/LDAP, databases and networking.
• Configure and maintain development, test and production environments.

Essential Experience

• Proven experience working within the UK MOD/Defence environment - essential.
• Strong experience in application installation, configuration and support within enterprise environments.
• Experience with Windows and/or Linux server environments.
• Knowledge of integrating applications with Active Directory, databases and web services.
• Experience supporting development, test and production environments.
• Understanding of application security and hardening.
• Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
• Experience producing LLDs, build guides and technical runbooks.
• Experience working within large and complex technical programmes.
• Understanding of ITIL/service management principles.
• Current SC or DV clearance.

Desirable

• Experience with IIS, Apache, Tomcat or other middleware/application servers.
• PowerShell, Bash or other scripting/automation experience.
• Knowledge of CI/CD and DevOps practices.
• Exposure to Docker/Kubernetes and containerised applications.
• Experience with Agile methodologies, Jira and Confluence.
• Relevant technical certifications or vendor training.

This role is suited to an Applications Engineer who has previously delivered application engineering and support within the MOD/Defence environment and is comfortable working in highly secure and complex technical environments.
