Some of the benefits
  • Salary -£42,479 to £49,976 (dependent on experience)
  • 26 days’ annual leave plus Bank Holidays
  • Outstanding pension scheme
  • Life assurance
Your role

As an Applications Developer, you will help shape and build modern digital applications that support the RNLI’s lifesaving work.

You will work across the full development lifecycle, turning ideas, user needs and designs into secure, accessible and reliable applications. These services will be used by RNLI volunteers, operational teams, supporters and staff, helping people work more effectively and supporting our mission to save lives at sea.

Working as part of our Applications Development team, you will have the opportunity to explore new technologies, influence technical decisions and improve how we design, build and deliver software. You will collaborate with developers, designers, platform specialists, product owners and colleagues from across the organisation.

This is a role where your code has a genuine purpose. Whether you are improving an existing service, integrating different platforms or creating something completely new, the applications you build can make a meaningful difference to the people who save lives.

You will also:

  • Design, develop, test and maintain modern, responsive applications using technologies such as .NET, C#, JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, Tailwind and CSS.
  • Build engaging and accessible user experiences using reactive front-end frameworks such as Vue and React.
  • Develop and consume APIs, helping our applications, data and digital platforms work together effectively.
  • Work with modern content management platforms, including traditional and headless CMS architectures.
  • Use Git and Azure DevOps to manage source code, peer reviews, automated build and release pipelines, deployments and development work.
  • Produce clean, well-structured and maintainable code, supported by appropriate automated testing and technical documentation.
  • Help improve our development standards, reusable components, processes and ways of working.
  • Work closely with colleagues to understand real user needs and turn them into practical, easy-to-use solutions.
  • Consider security, accessibility, performance and data protection throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Investigate problems, learn from feedback and continuously improve the applications and services we provide.
  • Share your knowledge, contribute ideas and support other developers as part of a collaborative and welcoming team.
  • Stay curious about emerging technology and help identify where it could deliver genuine value for the RNLI.
About you

You do not need to know every technology we use from day one. We are looking for someone with strong development foundations, a willingness to learn and an interest in using technology to solve meaningful problems.

You will bring:

  • Professional experience developing web applications using front-end and back-end technologies.
  • Experience with languages and technologies such as C#, .NET, JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, Tailwind and CSS, or comparable modern development tools.
  • Experience using a reactive front-end frameworks such as Vue or React.
  • An understanding of responsive design, accessibility and compatibility across different devices and browsers.
  • Experience working with APIs, system integrations and structured data.
  • Experience using Git-based source control, code reviews and modern development and deployment practices.
  • An understanding of how to write secure, reliable, testable and maintainable code.
  • The ability to work collaboratively, explain technical ideas clearly and contribute positively to a multidisciplinary team.
  • A practical, user-focused approach to solving problems, with curiosity, creativity and enthusiasm for learning.
  • A degree in computer science, information technology or a related subject, or equivalent practical experience.

It would be an advantage, but is not essential, if you have:

  • Experience developing solutions using Sitecore or another enterprise content management system.
  • Experience with headless CMS platforms, composable architectures or decoupled front-end applications.
  • Strong commercial experience with .NET and C#.
  • Experience building applications with Vue or React.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Azure services and cloud-based application development.
  • Experience with relational databases such as Microsoft SQL Server or MySQL.
  • Experience creating automated tests and working with continuous integration and deployment pipelines.
  • An understanding of web security, performance optimisation and recognised accessibility standards.
  • Experience working in an Agile delivery environment.

Most importantly, you will enjoy working with others, experimenting with ideas and creating digital experiences that make complicated tasks feel simple. If you want to develop your skills, build technology with a real social purpose and see how great applications can contribute to saving lives, we would love to hear from you.
