Job summary

Welsh Government is seeking an Application Operations Engineer (Power BI/Fabric) to maintain and support the Power BI/Microsoft Fabric platform underpinning the Data Visualisation Service. You will work within the Software Delivery Team to ensure service continuity and respond to user needs across departments.

Key tasks include setting up new workspaces, triaging faults, and collaborating with Product Manager and Cloud Infrastructure teams to optimise outputs and expand capabilities.

Responsibilities

• Maintaining the Power BI/Microsoft Fabric enterprise platform from the technical side.
• Ensure continuity and availability of the Power BI/Fabric platform for the business to use, working with a multi‑disciplined team.
• Support business users by setting up new workspaces and assisting with report production optimisation.
• Review, test, implement and communicate product updates through change processes.
• Liaise with the Service Desk on faults or requests and triage/resolve promptly.
• Advise with the Product Manager on migrating business areas into Power BI/Fabric and Data Visualisation Service.
• Regularly engage with users to understand evolving requirements for the service.
• Review Power BI and Microsoft Fabric features to identify issues and address them proactively.
• Support the Product Manager to ensure the Power BI/Fabric Product and Data Visualisation Service are used effectively with usage metrics.
• Collaborate with Cloud Infrastructure and Central Technical Services teams in a multi‑disciplined team.
• Provide technical guidance to the Power BI/Fabric and DVS user community via the Teams group.

Responsible for ensuring the technical continuity of the Data Visualisation Service, the Application Operations Engineer will provide advice and support to business users of the Power BI/Fabric platform by setting up new workspaces, supporting the creation of enterprise semantic models, triaging and resolving faults, and assisting with queries around optimisation of outputs. They will work closely with a range of stakeholders and business areas to understand user requirements and where required support them in moving to using Power BI.

At This Role Level, You Will

• monitor applications and be accountable for batch processes
• Carry out the duties of an end user computing engineer, such as fixing technical problems, maintaining hardware and liaising with the problem or incident manager

Your Main Day To Day Responsibilities Will Include

• Maintaining the Power BI/Microsoft Fabric enterprise platform from the technical side.
• Ensure continuity and availability of the Power BI/Fabric platform for the business to use by working as part of a multi-disciplined application support and development team, and closely with Cloud Infrastructure and Central Technical Services teams.
• Support the wider business users of the Power BI/Fabric platform by setting up new workspaces and assisting with queries around optimisation of report production.
• Review, test, implement and communicate product updates via the agreed change processes.
• Liaise with the Service Desk on faults or requests and triage and, where necessary, resolve them as promptly as possible.
• Work with the Product Manager to advise and support business areas migrating into Power BI/Fabric and the Data Visualisation Service.
• Liaise regularly with users to ensure an up‑to‑date awareness of their user requirements, considering if and how the service needs to be adapted to meet changing needs.
• Continually review the Power BI product (including new functionality available through Microsoft Fabric) and the Data Visualisation Service to identify potential issues or deficiencies and work with the Product Manager to proactively address these.
• Support the Product Manager in ensuring the Power BI/Fabric Product and Data Visualisation Service is being effectively used through regularly reviewing and reporting on usage metrics.
• Working as part of a multi-disciplined application development and support team, and closely with Cloud Infrastructure and Central Technical Services teams.
• Provide technical advice on the Power BI/Fabric and DVS user community by engaging with them via the Teams user group.
