Job summary

MacDermid Alpha Electronics Solutions, a segment of Element Solutions Inc., seeks an Applications Engineer for Film & Smart Surface Solutions. You will develop knowhow for product evaluation, testing and prototyping, and provide global technical support.

Working in the FSSS team, you will contribute to IME, FIM Modeling and product testing activities, collaborating with customers and internal R&D to enable product approvals and launches.

Qualifications

• Degree in Science or Engineering with 1–2 years in manufacturing (FIM or injection moulding preferred).
• Master/PhD with at least 1 year of industrial R&D experience if applicable.

Responsibilities

• Develop and validate new methods and test vehicles (FEM/FEA) aligned with marketing directions for customers/segments.
• Plan and perform internal tests assessing mechanical, thermal, electrical reliability of prototypes.
• Demonstrate materials performance to customers through assembly, testing and failure analyses.
• Investigate new technologies and adapt tests for new applications and customer requirements.
• Collaborate with components, vendors and assembly houses to create integrated customer solutions.
• Coordinate with Product Management and R&D to support product approvals and launches.
• Cross-functionally work with quality and process engineering for scale-up and testing of new products.
• Publish technical papers and present at conferences as needed.
• Calibrate equipment to ensure reliable research results.

Who are we looking for?

The Applications Engineer will be responsible for developing applications knowhow for product evaluation, material testing and characterization, and prototyping. In addition, this Applications Engineer will provide applications and technical support to global customers for Film & Smart Surface Solutions business.

As a key member of the Film and Smart Surface Solutions (F&SSS) Team, the Applications Engineer will be responsible for participating and contributing in new In-Mold Electronics (IME), FIM Modeling and Display products testing activities, developing applications knowhow for product evaluation, material testing and characterization, and prototyping. In addition, this Applications Engineer will provide applications and technical support to global customers.

What will you be doing?

• With minimal oversight, works to develop and validate new methods, test vehicles and technologies included FEM/FEA/modeling, to characterize our products in line with the Company’s marketing direction for specific customers or market segments.
• Plan and perform internal tests to assess performance such as mechanical, thermal and electrical reliability of product or its prototypes for new applications.
• Demonstrate process feasibility and performance of Film & Smart Surface Solutions materials to customers and partners by performing assembly, performance and reliability testing and failure analyses on internal as well as external test vehicles.
• Investigate and experiment with new technologies or ideas and modify the test to meet the new application and customer requirements.
• Work with components, equipment vendors, and assembly houses to develop integrated solutions for customers.
• Work closely with Product Management and R&D team to establish plans and execute projects to support customers towards product approvals and launch new products.
• Work across functional lines with quality, process engineering for scale up and testing of new products.
• Report project progress; publish technical papers and make conference presentations materials as needed.
• Calibrate research and test equipment to ensure dependable research results.

Qualifications & Experience

We are looking for candidates with one of the following:

• Bachelor's degree in Science (preferably Physics) or Engineering, together with 1-2 years' experience in a manufacturing environment, ideally within FIM or injection moulding.

OR

• Master's degree or PhD in Science (preferably Physics) or Engineering, with at least 1 year of industrial research and development experience.

What competencies will you need?

Ideally, you will have:

• Experience using ANSYS Polyflow or similar finite-element-based polymer processing software, including thermoforming simulation and thickness distribution prediction.
• Knowledge of Finite Element Method (FEM) modelling and analysis.
• Experience in materials testing, product characterisation, reliability testing, and failure analysis.
• Understanding of manufacturing processes, particularly injection moulding, FIM, or related technologies.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively with customers and cross-functional teams globally.
• Mathematical skills: Differential and integral calculus; Matrix Algebra.
• Experience using APQP concept.
