Job summary

British Antarctic Survey (BAS) seeks a Climate Scientist to join the Atmosphere, Ice, & Climate (AIC) team in Cambridge on a fixed‑term contract. The role focuses on Rain on Antarctic Sea Ice and Its Impacts (ROASII), using models and observations to quantify rainfall over sea ice and develop projections for the future.

You will collaborate with BAS, Leeds and Reading, and international peers, to improve representation of rainfall in sea ice models and to publish scientific results.

Qualifications

  • PhD in atmospheric sciences, geosciences, or another relevant subject.
  • Experience analysing and visualising climate datasets from models, observations and reanalyses.
  • Strong understanding of climate and meteorology.
  • Excellent numerical skills with a solid grasp of statistics.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently.
  • Able to work as part of a team and also autonomously.

Responsibilities

  • Compare rain and snowfall characteristics over Antarctic sea ice from model datasets with observations.
  • Use the best performing dataset to quantify present‑day rainfall (and snowfall) over sea ice.
  • Determine synoptic atmospheric processes and modes linked to rain on sea ice events using models and reanalysis.
  • Select global climate models to derive improved projections of rainfall over Antarctic sea ice up to 2100.
  • Attend and contribute to project meetings and international science conferences.
