At Wigan & Leigh College, every day brings opportunities to make a real difference. Working alongside our Animal Management team, you'll help ensure outstanding care for our animals while creating the practical learning experiences that inspire and prepare our students for careers within the animal care industry.

This is a hands‑on role where no two days are the same. From maintaining high standards of animal welfare and preparing specialist facilities to supporting practical sessions and helping students develop industry skills, you'll be an important part of our learners' journey.

Our Animal Management provision is growing, and we're looking for someone who has a drive for excellence, professionalism and animal welfare.

What you’ll do

As an Animal Management Technician, you'll play a key role in supporting both curriculum delivery and the day-to-day operation of our animal facilities.

You'll:

  • Provide high-quality care and husbandry for a range of animals and monitor animal health and welfare.
  • Maintain accurate records and support lecturers and students during practical sessions.
  • Maintain animal accommodation and specialist facilities to professional standards.
  • Manage stock, consumables and resources required for curriculum delivery.
  • Promote and maintain excellent health, safety and hygiene practices.
  • Help create a positive, inclusive and engaging learning environment for all students.
What you’ll bring
  • A Level 3 qualification in Animal Management, Animal Care or a related discipline.
  • Level 2 English and Maths (or equivalent).
  • Practical experience working with animals in a professional setting.
  • Experience maintaining excellent animal welfare and husbandry standards.
  • Good knowledge of health and safety practices within animal care environments.
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a wider team.
  • Excellent communication skills and a proactive approach to problem-solving.

Experience within education, veterinary, zoological or wider animal care settings would be advantageous, as would experience supporting learners in practical environments.

What You’re Like
  • Caring. You will place animal welfare at the heart of every decision you make.
  • Practical. You are confident with hands‑on responsibilities and committed to maintaining excellent standards.
  • Reliable. Colleagues can depend on you to keep facilities, routines and resources running smoothly.
  • Observant. You are able to identify and address issues quickly before they become larger problems.
  • Organised. You are effective at managing daily routines, records, equipment and resources.
  • Collaborative. You will work in partnership with lecturers, students and external partners.
Essentials
  • You'll need an enhanced DBS check. If you get the job, we'll do this for you.
  • You're committed to safeguarding, inclusion and the college values.
  • You can work across college sites and other locations where college activity takes place.
  • You're willing to work flexibly when required, including supporting animal welfare needs outside normal working hours where necessary.
  • You're committed to maintaining current industry knowledge and completing relevant professional development.
  • You'll follow college policies, including safeguarding, health and safety, equality and diversity, data protection, freedom of information and confidentiality.
  • A driving licence is essential, due to travelling across sites.
Why work with us?

Great people. Change lives.

At Wigan & Leigh College, you'll be part of a supportive team that shares your commitment to outstanding animal welfare and student success.
