Job summary

East Staffordshire Borough Council is seeking a motivated Allocations Officer to deliver a fair, transparent housing allocations service. You will assess housing applications, maintain records, verify evidence and manage Choice Based Lettings with partnerships with providers.

The role requires strong organisational, communication and decision-making skills to support housing outcomes while following policy and procedures. Hybrid working options are available.

Qualifications

  • Experience of assessing or managing housing applications and supporting customers through housing-related processes.
  • Experience of managing complex or sensitive cases and making recommendations in line with policy.
  • Good organisational and administrative skills, with the ability to maintain accurate records and manage competing priorities.
  • Understanding of housing allocations policy, Housing Register processes and Choice Based Lettings systems.
  • Experience of using housing systems, preferably Locata or similar software.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and process housing applications and maintain Housing Register records.
  • Verify supporting evidence and administer Choice Based Lettings processes including advertising properties, shortlisting applicants and nominations.
  • Provide clear, courteous advice to applicants and handle sensitive conversations professionally.
  • Collaborate with Registered Providers, partner agencies and internal departments to deliver fair housing outcomes.
  • Maintain compliance with legislation, guidance and the Councils Allocations Policy.

The Role

We are seeking a motivated and customer-focused Allocations Officer to join our Housing Service. This is an important role supporting the delivery of the Council’s Housing Allocations service and Choice Based Lettings scheme, helping to ensure that homes are allocated fairly, transparently and in accordance with legislation, statutory guidance and the Council’s Allocations Policy.

In this role, you will assess and process housing applications, maintain accurate Housing Register records, verify supporting evidence and administer Choice Based Lettings processes including advertising properties, shortlisting applicants and making nominations. You will provide clear advice to applicants, handle sensitive conversations professionally, and work closely with Registered Providers, partner agencies and internal departments to support successful housing outcomes.

We are looking for someone with experience of managing housing cases, strong organisational and administrative skills, and the ability to manage a caseload and prioritise workload effectively. You will have a good understanding of allocations policy and Choice Based Lettings systems, strong communication and customer service skills, and the ability to make sound recommendations and decisions in line with policy and procedure.

Key Requirements
  • Experience of managing complex housing cases and making defensible decisions.
  • Good organisational and administrative skills.
  • Ability to manage a caseload and prioritise workload effectively.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Understanding of allocations policy and Choice Based Lettings systems.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure, manage conflict and deal with people sensitively in stressful situations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with Registered Providers, partner agencies and internal departments.
  • GCSE Grade C or equivalent in Maths and English.
