Job summary

MAG, East Midlands Airport, is seeking an Air Traffic Control Assistant (ATCA) to cover a 24/7 roster on site. You will support ATC Officers with flight plans, NOTAMs and CHROMA data, while training for recurrence tasks in the ATC simulator.

Ideal candidates have GCSEs, good English/Maths, and IT skills; ability to work under pressure and a path to controller training. A collaborative, safety‑mocused environment awaits.

Responsibilities

• Processing incoming and outgoing AFTN signals, flight plans, messages and other AIS information.
• Dissemination of NOTAMs and SNOWTAMs; liaising with Brussels IFPS.
• Liaising with Departure Flow Regulator and airlines; obtaining departure slots.
• Preparation and handling of Electronic Flight Progress Strips; CHROMA system.
• Coordination with airport departments and agencies; stand allocation & engine runs.
• Notification of Emergency authorities during Emergencies.
• Meteorological observing, reporting and ATIS recording; passing weather information.

The role

The Air Traffic Control Assistant (ATCA) is required to work to a roster covering 24 hours per day, 365 days per year assisting Air Traffic Control Officers in their day-to-day duties. All Air Traffic Control Assistants are expected to maintain a general understanding of key ATC documents, pass the Met Observers Course, and pass annual competency assessments.

Alongside this, the ATCA will be trained in pseudo-pilot operations in order to help deliver recurrence training for all Controllers in the ATC simulator.

The key responsibilities include...

• Processing incoming and outgoing AFTN signals, flight plans, associated messages and other AIS information.
• Transmission and dissemination of NOTAMs and SNOWTAMs, decoding and encoding as required, liaising with Brussels IFPS.
• Liaising with Departure Flow Regulator and airlines, obtaining departure slots and slot revisions.

• Preparation and handling of Electronic Flight Progress Strips, and entering information in to the CHROMA Flight Information and Display system.

• Co-ordination with other airport departments, companies and agencies; stand allocation, tow approvals, engine runs, etc. Co-ordination with other Air Traffic Control units; slots, aircraft changes, weather information, etc.

• Notification of and Liaison with Emergency authorities during Emergencies.

• Meteorological observing, reporting and ATIS recording (following the successful completion of a Meteorological Observers course with a recognised training provider) Passing of Meteorological information including Warnings to airport personnel and tenants via CHROMA Fusion

What will make you successful in the role?

Any experience of Air Traffic Control is clearly an advantage, but we are also looking to find people who don’t have experience but have the right attributes. These will include

• Education to the equivalent standard of 5 GCSEs including maths and English.
• Good command of English, Maths and excellent IT skills (knowledge of Microsoft office suite)
• The ability to perform and communicate well under pressure.
• The capability to develop a range of skills for future development with the potential to progress to controller training.
• Develop spatial awareness skills, multi-tasking, assertiveness, team spirit.
• The ability to engender a harmonious working relationship with diverse individuals.
