Job summary

Ellison Institute of Technology (EIT) in Oxford is building an AI and Robotics platform to empower scientists to move from a question to a designed experiment to a result. You will own the system architecture from model endpoint to interface as part of the founding team, starting as an individual contributor with potential to build a team.

You will be the technical anchor for how AI models reach scientists, shaping the technical direction and prioritising work in an emerging category.

Qualifications

• Built and shipped systems from scratch as a core engineer or created something new inside a larger organisation.
• Built agentic AI products with orchestration, tool use, human-in-the-loop review and evaluation.
• Designed production-ready systems with APIs, data models, testing, deployment, observability and failure recovery.
• Built policy-aware systems with durable audit trails and trustworthy records.
• Full-stack and self-sufficient, able to take a system from model endpoint to production interface.
• Able to create clarity from ambiguity and set technical direction for user adoption.

Responsibilities

• Build an agentic workflow for scientists end to end, from model endpoints to the user interface.
• Build and operate the technical foundations for agentic systems, including orchestration, tool interfaces, state management, evaluation, observability and failure recovery.
• Design evaluative frameworks to understand if the deployed model is working.
• Work directly with scientists, observe how they operate and translate what you learn into clear engineering priorities.
• Synthesize knowledge from individual workflows to build generalisable capability.
• Partner with product, data and research to shape the roadmap and ship at speed in an emerging category where the most impactful problems remain unsolved.
