Job summary

GKN Aerospace Global Technology Centre in Bristol is looking for Year in Industry students for a 12‑month industrial placement starting Aug/Sep 2027. You will join the Subtractive Machining Technology team, gaining hands-on experience with metallic manufacturing processes for future aircraft technologies.

You’ll spend time in manufacturing and labs, have access to a 5-axis CNC machine, and collaborate with production sites, universities, and partners to advance machining capabilities.

Qualifications

• Must be studying towards an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or another related engineering discipline.
• Willingness to learn new technical skillsets, both software and hardware.
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a diverse team.
• Written and verbal communication skills in English.

Responsibilities

• Placements in the GKN Subtractive Machining Technology team to develop knowledge and skills in metallic manufacturing processes for the next generation of aircraft.
• Work with production sites to improve current technology and develop machining technology for tomorrow.
• Access to a 5-axis CNC machine and advanced metallic testing facility; collaborate with universities and catapult partners.
• Spend around 20-40% of time hands-on with manufacturing or laboratory equipment.
• Machining and finishing of samples using state-of-the-art equipment at the GTC.
• Testing and development of machining technologies within the GTC or onsite facilities.
• Creation of NC code for machining of components; simulate machining programs.
• Exposure to current machining centres in production facilities within GKN.
