Job summary

Imperial College London is seeking a Research Assistant or Associate to advance the mechanics of advanced composite structures at its South Kensington campus, operating in a hybrid arrangement. The role centers on fractographic analysis of 3D polymer composites and involvement with industry partners, universities, and Rolls-Royce for next-generation aero-engines.

Qualifications

• PhD in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
• First-class Master's in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or closely related discipline
• Experience with non-destructive evaluation and optical/SEM techniques
• Practical experience in mechanical testing of composites and knowledge of polymer composite failure mechanisms
• Interest in collaboration with other universities and industry

Responsibilities

• Visual inspection of composite coupons using fractographic techniques
• Deduce damage and failure sequences in coupons, elements and components
• Develop new fractographic techniques for 3D composite microstructures
• Communicate fractographic findings to academic and industry partners to inform future aerostructure design and FI capability
