Job summary

NHS Blood and Transplant is seeking an Advanced Specialist Biomedical Scientist to apply transfusion and transplantation science expertise in a high‑quality laboratory setting, supporting patient care and saving lives. You will perform, interpret and report complex investigations, mentor colleagues, and contribute to training while driving service improvements.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience in diagnostic or testing laboratory with transfusion science expertise
• Strong ability to analyse information and resolve complex problems
• Experience building effective working relationships with colleagues and healthcare professionals
• Ability to prioritise competing demands and manage workloads under deadlines
• Experience supervising, training or mentoring colleagues and sharing specialist knowledge

Responsibilities

• Perform specialist and complex laboratory investigations to support safe transfusion and transplantation services and improve patient outcomes
• Analyse and interpret routine and complex test results, providing accurate and timely reporting
• Maintain high standards of quality, safety and compliance for reliable patient care
• Provide expert advice and guidance to colleagues, hospitals and partner services
• Mentor healthcare scientists and others to develop specialist practice
• Lead service improvements by identifying trends and implementing solutions
• Oversee use, validation and maintenance of laboratory equipment and systems
• Develop and review standard operating procedures to promote consistency and quality
• Coordinate team activities to ensure work is prioritised and delivered to a high standard
• Contribute to research and ongoing development of specialist knowledge within NHSBT
